Et bien sûr New York, Manhattan, Central Park. -- Click here for Professors and Staff Archives Back to Top 1943 to 1949● Betsy Jolas ('43) wrote: "Please visit my personal website: http://www.betsyjolas.com ('catalogue' for latest info on compositions -'actualités' for updated agenda)" --Click here for Class Notes Archives -- Betsy Jolas ('43) website -- On the Internet: Consuelo (Eames) Hanks ('45) -- Books by Joanna (Rogers) Macy ('47) Back to Top 1950 to 1958DECÉS: Jules Huot ('51) (See Milestones/In Memoriam section for further details.) Very nice feeling. After having been in Normandy for the last 15 years, during which I restored houses, ran an artist studio in which I created and sold hand painted scarves to various clients including Libery's in London, as well as watercolors, and later training as an art therapist, I decided to sell up and try to change areas. So last November I went of to the alpes to have a look around, but was eventualy led back to Normandy where after all I feel at home (even if other plans are brewing on the back burner) and have just bought a house near Honfleur in the heart of impressionist country! After being SDF ("sans domicile fixe") for 6 months that sure feels good. Ahead lays a bit more renovation work, creating a garden and mostly setting up my art studio. So lots of new and exciting times ahead! And if anyone is planing on being near Normandy after begining of July when I actually sign for this house, hope I hear from you! Love to all" ● From Marc Salz: "In 1956 my parents donated a sculpture by Matisse titled 'The Serf'. While visiting the new MoMA in New York with my friend Ted Knerr and his wife, we decided to remember my parents by taking this photo [see photo]. I was six years old when they donated it and was more interested in toy trains than Matisses." ● From Marianne Sauvage : "I just saw this trivia thing [in the previous AALFNY newsletter] and it made me laugh...although in all fairness, I did not write the notes on 'Survival Run; and I felt it cheapened my accomplishments a little. For the past four years, I have been an independent historic preservation consultant and currently, most of my projects are historic district and historic neighborhood studies for the City of Seattle. Some of this work also involves city politics, which, even in Seattle, (as opposed to New York), can be surprisingly lively. My positions have all related to “Public Diplomacy” which involves managing educational and cultural exchanges as well as organizing speaker programs. (In US Embassies these are the jobs that are by far the most fun.) I am married to a Frenchwoman, Marie-Christine, and we have three bi-national kids. I was touched to see the tribute to History and Geography teacher Martin Kieffer in Alumni Newsletter # 20 and gratified that thoughtful alumni had contacted him so near the end of his life to express their appreciation. In reading Monsieur Kieffer’s letter of 1998 in the “related links” section, it dawned on me that this was the very first time I was observing him expressing himself in English. But we had a good time seeing the sites and going on the Dublin GhostBusTour to see haunted Dublin, including Bram Stoker's old flat and many of the ghoulish sites that may have inspired him. Marguey even found a four leaf clover on Slaine Hill, while Jeremy was more interested in the prechristian Celtic aspects of Ireland which he atributes to his contact with Asterix, Obelix & Panoramix from his years at the Lycee. Salut les copains!" ● Nadia Kondratiev-Popov wrote: "I am still in Manila, in the hot, hazy, humid, extremely polluted atmosphere of this very third world country. I stress the third world-ness for those who have been in that world. It goes with corruption, crime, instability, a situation where the police or figures of authority are not necessarily your friends or interested in your well being. The other side of the coin is that, as ex-pats, we live in large, beautiful houses with household help and a certain ease of movement within the realm that ex-pats occupy, not all of society. We witness a level of poverty that is unimaginable until it has been witnessed first hand, routine injustices that a person from the developed world would not believe allowable even in theory. Our beautiful houses are equipped with electric and plumbing systems that are the subject of much of the local humour. There is a bathroom for every room, for example, and it is only after living here a while that you realize that that is the only way that you will have one working toilet, one working sink, one working shower, not always in the same room, but at least "a place to go". My computer has been fried even though it is plugged into a heavy duty voltage regulator; one power surge blew the regulator and the computer as well as several fuses. But here we are starting our sixth year of self-imposed exile. Sergei, my husband, works for the Asian Development Bank. He's working on projects in China, mostly. As a "trailing spouse" I have found some things to do. I got an MBA from Herriot Watt University that does distance learning quite well. I was coerced into being the secretary of the spouse association of the ADB. That means that I edited their newsletter and as not too many people contributed material, I've had fun filling the pages myself with articles and illustrations which have amused most readers but have distressed the more conservative ones. They are now very relieved that my time is up and another spouse has taken over and all will return to the way it was before, when the spouse newsletter could be happily confused with any other ADB document. Otherwise, I have been painting and am working on a book about Manila incorporating pictures and stories. Meanwhile, I have participated in art exhibits here and helped set one up and designed and published its catalogue. I've recently launched into grant writing as a way to be "gainfully employed". We spend our vacations traveling in the region as much as possible, though the summers are spent in Europe, mostly. I haven't been back to New York since summer 2001. After the Sept. 11 horror, the price of the airplane ticket became prohibitive. So, I see my family in France and we also go to Russia to see Sergei's family; life is made of compromises. I came to help the government start the first centers for the mentally handicapped in 1977. After working for several years helping to create awareness and starting teacher training programs in that area, I shifted my interest to special needs in the regular schools. My work in schools involved starting resource classes for students with special needs, in-service teacher training in three main areas: special needs, class management and behavior management in the regular classroom. I served as a consultant for UNESCO for the Middle East area and most of my missions involved training both at the governmental and teacher level in special needs. At present, I have shifted my interest once again and am now working with a team of professionals to work with autistic children and support their families. In addition, I have always done developmental assessments for children from birth to 6 years. My work with young children and teacher training are my two passions. I have been married for 25 years and have two children. My son just finished his first year of college in hotel management in the US and my daughter is attending an International Baccalaureate school here in Amman and is going up to 11th grade." --Click here for Class Notes Archives Back to Top 1978● Annabelle Cone wrote: "I have been teaching at Dartmouth College for ten years as a senior lecturer. This spring I am teaching a French class along with a LFNY class of '04 named Corinne Wyeth who is my drill instructor (teaching assistant). I'm sending along a photo of the two of us taken in a classroom in Dartmouth Hall. As for news about me in general. Where to begin? Well, let's see, three years in New York City after college were spent renovating a house in Park Slope, teaching at a private school, and working in film and video. Then I moved to New Hampshire and also went to Brown for my PhD in French Literature, soon followed by child number 1 (Rosalie) and child number 2 (Clara). I am busy with teaching and children, and enjoying all of the above. I stay in touch with Stephanie Carson-Parker and Carla Rosen who are both on the other side of the Atlantic in French speaking countries with French husbands! She used to live near me and comes around every now and then. I can't believe we still recognized each other after all of these years, especially since I didn't even eat the hot lunch. She looks the same too. She was nostalgic about the good ole days when M. Galy was around." ● From Riccardo Guariglia: "Dear friends of the LFNY, it is really amazing to read news from all of you in the "class notes" columns! Congratulations for the patience and dedication of those of you who work on this beautiful site. Here are a few updated elements on me and my family's life: we now live here in Brasilia for six months. It is an extremely interesting experience for all of us. The life is very pleasant, local people are really friendly, and -as compared to other cities in Brazil - everything looks very quiet! When we have time, we travel around: there are so many beautiful things to see, especially related to nature, which is unspoiled. Recently, we spent a few days on a fantastic beach, between Salvador (what an exciting town!) and Ilheus: real paradise! Our children (Raffaele, 15; Nicola, almost 14; and Maria Benedetta, 12) are having great time, also at the "Lycée Français de Brasilia", and we are all charmed by the warmth of this country! My work, as deputy head of the Italian Embassy, is also very rewarding and challenging! It's hard work, very competitive but I love it. I am very happily married to Tibo (2nd hubby) and have two fantastic children, Teymour (15) and Soraya (3). I'm currently working on a special feature about a dominatrix (!) and will be a subject in a photo book called Black & White. I'm still in touch with Livia Corredor ,my first best friend at the Lycee -- I was being punished for some minor crime in 12e and sitting outside the class with the surveillant when Livia and her mother walked in. She was the "new kid in the class" and --because her hair was even longer than mine -- I knew we'd be friends for life. I was right! I also occasionally talk to Kriti Siderakis and owe Natalie Yates a much overdue phone call. I was also extremely close to Nicolas Reynard, who died a few months ago in a plane crash in the Rio Negro in the Amazon. We'd just spoken a few days earlier and he was due to talk to my daughter's class at UNIS about the Amazon a few weeks later.
