MME. ROSA ANIDJAR (Prof. de Classes Elementaires & Surveillante --1981-1997) “was on her way home from her frequent visits to a local synagogue just before 8:30 p.m. on May 3, 2014 when she she was struck and killed by a [car] driving north on the Queens Boulevard service road ….. According to [her] daughter, Karine Anidjar, 51, who lived with her mother, relatives didn't realize anything was wrong until Sunday night, when her mother still hadn't come home. “She was always out, socializing with her friends and she was very active in her temples,” she said, adding that her mother would occasionally stay overnight with her friends. “The week before she died, she actually was out dancing until the middle of the night and eating pizza at 3 o’clock in the morning,” she added. “The last few years she really was living her life to the fullest,” Anidjar said. Relatives remembered her as a fun loving and energetic person who "lived her life to the fullest." She emigrated with her husband and three children from Morocco in 1967 and then worked as a teacher at the Lycee Francais de New York …..She left behind 6 grandchildren, ages 12 to 17, for whom she whipped up regular meals, especially for the Jewish holidays. “She always made big dinners for Passover for the entire family,” said Ed Finkenberg, 60, a relative who lives in California, adding that sometimes more than a dozen people would attend.”

DORRIT (ZUCKER-HALE) COHN (’42) (LSY: Term. in 1942) died on March 10, 2012, of complications from Parkinson’s disease. [She was] “internationally recognized as a major literary theorist and one of the first women to be appointed to tenure at Harvard.....[She] was born.....in Vienna, Austria, the younger daughter in a prosperous, assimilated Jewish family. Her father, Herbert Zucker, owned a hat factory in a small town in Czechoslovakia.....Dorrit grew up with the cultural and educational privileges of her class: she studied music, was fluent in French, and loved theater and opera. This comfortable life came to an abrupt end in March 1938, when Hitler’s troops marched into Austria and annexed it to Nazi Germany. The Zucker family had the good fortune to leave the country just before the Anschluß. The following year, after temporary sojourns in Zurich and Paris, they arrived in New York, where Dorrit was enrolled in the Lycée Français and obtained her baccalaureate.
In 1941, Dorrit was admitted to Radcliffe College, graduating four years later with a major in physics. She liked to tell the story of how she switched from physics to literature.....
In 1945, she started graduate work in comparative literature at Radcliffe where she obtained a Master’s degree; the following year she enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Yale, where she met and married her fellow student Robert Greer Cohn. Like many women at the time, she felt she could not combine a demanding career with marriage and motherhood. After the birth of her first child, Steve, in 1949, she interrupted her studies and did not resume them again until 1962. She obtained her doctorate from Stanford.....Soon after, she was offered a teaching position at Indiana University, moving there with her children. She earned tenure and remained in Bloomington until 1971, when she was appointed Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard. In 1984 she was invited to join Harvard’s Department of Comparative Literature.....Dorrit made a landmark contribution to the field of narrative theory in 1978 with the publication of her book Transparent Minds: Narrative Modes for Presenting Consciousness in Fiction, a landmark work that is still assigned in graduate seminars today as the standard work on the subject.....
Her prize-winning book The Distinction of Fiction (published in 1999, when she was 75 years old) captured in its title a hallmark of her scholarly work. She was a master in making fine distinctions and in taking texts apart, only to put them back together again in ways that led to deeper understanding and appreciation.....
The same can be said of Dorrit Cohn’s teaching. Students flocked to her courses on the modern novel, on turn-of-the-century Vienna, and on the fairy tale and novella. Quietly charismatic, she combined broad erudition and disciplinary rigor with intellectual firepower.....
After retiring from Harvard in 1995, Dorrit studied Ancient Greek and wrote about Platonic dialogues. She translated works from French and German…..and she continued to read widely in fiction and literary criticism. At her second home in Wellfleet, where she had spent the summers for many years, she swam and played tennis with her family and with colleagues and students, who had the chance to enjoy her hospitality and share her love of Cape Cod.
She is survived by her two sons, Steve Cohn, Director of Duke University Press, and Richard Cohn, Battell Professor of Music Theory at Yale University, and by four grandchildren.....”

» (http://www.cst.fr/so-long-good-bye-frank/)

Jean-Francois Lloan-Reyssi ('62): "May Barbara's soul rest in peace."
Yolande Bourgeois-Pichat ('62): "I am so sad to read your message and to know that Colette(Barbara) passed away. We always think we are eternal and when one of us dies we can't beleive it !!! It's a little consolation that it was sudden and quick."
Dyllia Zannettos ('62): "I was very sad to hear of Barbara's/Colette's passing. I had seen Barbara in August of 2009 for a coffee between a plane and a train on my way to see a friend near Le Mans. Very nice and bright lady."

MICHEL VONDERWEIDT (’64) (LSY: 1ere in 1963) “of Trumansburg died peacefully in his sleep on September 12, 2014 at the age of 66. He is survived by his children, Steve (Yvonne) of Syracuse, NY and Chris (Melissa) of Bowdoinham, ME….....; sister Carole (Mark) Hansen (’69) of Syracuse, NY...Born in New York City, Michel grew up living in the city, where he attended school during the week, and spent his weekends on a dairy farm in Bridgewater, CT. Michel went on to attend Cornell University and then worked as a manager at ISA Babcock for a number of years before finishing his career as an electrician at Cayuga Medical Center. Michel was generous, unpretentious, hardworking, practical, and he would do anything to help his family and friends. He was an accomplished gardener with two sizeable garden plots and intentionally planted more than he and his family could ever eat. The excess produce was joyfully gifted to his friends and neighbors. An avid soccer lover, Michel was a fixture at Trumansburg soccer matches in the mid-80’s through 1997 when his son played. Michel supported the team in a number of ways.....He was also a devoted fan of Syracuse University sports, especially men’s basketball, football, and lacrosse. Michel was skilled in most of the trades, but he studied and taught himself finer woodworking techniques later on life. His patience and attention to detail were a perfect fit and he became a near-master woodworker. His works, mostly gifts for family and friends, included cribs, clocks, mirrors, pens, and a kayak that was the envy of his “paddling friends”. Michel loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, bird watching, camping, fishing and boating; he spent the majority of his leisure time kayaking later on in life.”

Comments from Michel's classmates:

Comments from Peter's classmates:
Remy Ayache ('69): "What terrible news. I feel so sad about Peter’s passing. I have very fond memories about the Lyceé and Peter’s friendship. We had a chance to get together for lunch in New York about nine or ten years ago and we both reminisced about the old days, the teachers, the “surveillants” and of course our fellow students. He was telling me how he went through some difficult years before he found his true calling in mathematics and Courant Institute where I spent a lot of time when I was going through my degree. We discussed life and the fact that he had moved to Rome, picked up Italian and spoke fluently and had gotten married later in life. It was a very impressive turn of events. It’s funny the things you remember. We both enjoyed some of the old French music by Gilbert Becaud, Aznavour and others. I send my condolences to his family and spouse. Peter was a smart and very pleasant guy that will truly be missed. He certainly left us at a young age."

Claudia Link ('84) informed us that her sister KARIN M. LINK ('70) (LSY: Term. in 1970) "passed away on March 27, 2015 of cancer related complications."

Comments from Karin's classmates (posted on her Facebook page):
Laurence Falzon ('70): "Oh Karin Karin , I can't believe you are gone. I remember the smart, delicate and graceful young girl of early schooldays. I was so happy to be able to renew with you by FB, admired each and every one of your brilliant posts; you always found touching words and pictures that warmed my heart, awakened interest. You seem to have had a full life of Love and Passion.....still too soon to go. I will miss you and wish your family and friends all the strength they can find in such a tragic moment."
Romana Lowe ('70): " I am in shock - so terribly sad. I remember Karin exactly as does Laurence. Karin was so gentle, so beautiful, so smart - a friend from the Lycée, and I did so enjoy the renewed contact via FB. My condolences to her family."
Georges Foy ('70): "Karin was, is still in our minds, a beautiful, gentle, intelligent, talented and generous girl and woman. I know memorial testimonies always emphasize the positive but after going through every year of school with her I can honestly say I really never saw a negative in Karin: just the qualities above. I thank Facebook for all its faults for allowing us to correspond with Karin and read her posts, especially about art and conservation; they were without fail interesting and insightful. I hope her family can take consolation in the fact of a useful life well lived."
Ilona Ross ('70) "Sad, sad loss. My heart goes out to friends and family. Karin's posts on FB were so full of character that I would reread them every so often to get a dose of this wonderful person. Karin, you will be missed."
Carole (Hanania) Pinto ('70): "My deepest condolences to Karen s family and close friends - she was too young to leave this world."
Dominique (Joly) Demoustier ('70): "So sorry and sad to hear about your passing. Even though it is too soon to depart, I am sure you had a full life. I will always remember you from the Lycee days. I wish your family a lot of strength to accompany you on your last voyage."
Laurence Kuffer ('70): "I feel very sad about this because, of all my old school friends, very few have kept contact with me and Karin was one of the most enthusiastic persons. I didn't know she was ill, but I will keep in memory her smile as on the photo you have sent us."

MARIA RUSANOVSKY-GAVIGNAN ('70) (LSY: 4eme in 1966) (deceased September 10, 2013) “known affectionately to her family and friends as Masha, was born in New York to parents Filip and Natalia Rusanovsky. Masha and her older sister Irina [‘69] were raised by a single parent after their father passed while the children were young. Her mother sacrificed for her beloved girls, sending them to the finer schools in New York, immersing both in the Russian and French culture in preparation for a better life. But Masha’s life was not easy, and her younger years' experiences colored the rest of her life. At 18 years of age, she gave birth to her only daughter, Natasha (Natalie) and at 20 years of age, she moved to Florida to find a better life for them both. There she met her husband in 1974, handsome Irish retired Air force flight engineer and local postman Alfred Gavigan, Jr. They were together almost 30 years until he passed in 2003. She worked her way up to become a Staff Accountant at Palm Beach County Airports, being a wiz with numbers and having an incredible eye for detail. Masha had an eye for beauty and a passion for helping others, even when she herself was struggling with chronic illness .....”

CORINNE (CLEJEAN) KERZ ('78) (LSY: 2nde in 1976) "born on 17 March 1960 in Chicago, Illinois to Sheila and Deodat Clejan, died on 1 December 2015 after several years' illness. A graduate of the Lycee Francais, Barnard College and the NYU School of Business, she enjoyed a professional career as Controller of Health Management Systems, Inc. before devoting herself to her beloved children, Danton, Kolya and India and her step-daughter Andrea. Active at her children's schools and with a variety of charitable causes, Corinne will be sorely missed by her mother; her three brothers, Jean Pierre, Marc and James; innumerable dear friends; her many tennis buddies; the "Paillard Princesses"; and, most of all, by her adoring husband, Paul."

Comments from Corinne's classmates:
Carla Rosen Vacher ('78): "Shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Corinne's passing... fondest memories of our school friendship, together with her brother J.P. I greatly admired Corinne and will always remember her worldly and striking elegance and kindness."
Tristesse."

INES TRACEY (THOMPSON) COMPTON ('79) (LSY: 1ere in 1978) "passed from this life on March 20, 2015 while in Solana Beach, Calif. surrounded by her husband, Thomas; son, Nicholas, and daughter, Natasha.....Words fall so short of describing our beloved Ines and her incredibly wealthy, engaging, loving, intelligent, creative, versatile, indefatigable presence."

Comments from Ines Tracey's classmates:
Anne Adelman ('79): "I am deeply saddened to learn of Tracey’s death. Tracey had a rare sparkle and warmth, an incredibly generous spirit, a wonderful sense of humor and passion for life. She was an extraordinary friend, loyal and true, inspiring and reassuring, always there and ready to give of her love, support and encouragement. Our friendship spanned many years at the Lycee and beyond. In spite of the time and miles that eventually separated us, she instilled in me a deep respect for the power of a true and abiding attachment. Her compassion, true grit and loving nature will be greatly missed."

JANINE ROFE ('80) (LSY: 6eme in 1974) passed away on December 2, 2014. Her sister Colette ('80) told us that "some of the happiest years of Janine's life were the years spent with her Lycee friends among them: Brigitte Dauman, Nina Wolff, Alessandra Kelmans, Vivian Preston." In her last communication with the Alumni Association in late 2003, Janine wrote: "I would like to say hello to all the classmates I remember: Alessandra Kelmans, Brigitte Dauman, Leo Joachim, Suzie Reese, Johnny Schwab ..... I was the one who always got into fights with my sister Colette Rofé in M. Fontaine's class. I live in Charleston, SC and have owned a foreign language school and translation service for 20 years in the South. My sister Colette is married with one son (a real cutie named Marc). I have not married, I have spent much time in building a business, completing a degree in Social Work, enabling me to train social workers to better serve the Latino population. Much travel as well. Hope all is well with my ex-classmates."

MICHEL MAHE ('82) (LSY: Terminale in 1982):
"Vermont restaurant owner Michel Mahe died July 21, 2015. He was the son of a popular French chef in New York, N.Y. Mahe moved to Vermont in 1999 to open a string of popular, award-winning restaurants."
".....Mahe — known for his gracious hospitality and wild ambition as much as for his food — grew up in a New York restaurant family and cooked at landmark restaurants Gotham Bar & Grill and Michael's on 50th before landing in Vermont in 1999. After opening Starry Night Café with a partner that year, the chef went solo and debuted the Black Sheep Bistro in Vergennes in 2002, which he followed with many other eateries, including the Bearded Frog, Bobcat Café & Brewery, Next Door Bakery, Park Squeeze, and, in early 2014, the Lobby. His culinary portfolio spanned from pub fare to upscale and fanciful, all delivered with friendly, easy charm and minimal pretense."

Comments from Michel's classmates:
Franck Siebert ('82): "Sadness is what first comes to mind with the news of Michel Mahé’s sudden death. I remember him, back at the Lycée Français in New York: smiling and kind, always friendly, very often walking seemingly at the brink of losing balance yet always back on his feet, a very sympathetic fellow. My deepest sympathies go to the family of Michel and to those he cared about."
Soraya (Diné) Rodriguez ('82): "Rest in Peace, Michel. God bless."
Zoé (Greene) Williams ('82): "I am devastated. Michel was part of my childhood, we were in the same grade through all of his time in the Lycee. He was infinitely gracious and kind, charming, devilishly impish and absolutely hilarious. I have nothing but the fondest memories of him. I am very happy to see how successful he was and it looks like he was able to spread his charm far and wide. I am sad we didn't stay in touch. Michel Michel mon cher ami!"
Caroline Danois-Maricq ('82): "Michel Mahe was one of my friends since primary class (picture with Jean-Philippe Ake and I at the communion (Father Tiercelin)). If there was the tv series "Denis la malice", we had our "Michel la malice"! Michel was always very super active and boiling of mischievous ideas. I remember well the teachers and surveillants calling "Mahe !" to stay still but with no result! When I was "deléguée de class" for 2 years and had to defend the classmates in their "dynamic behaviors", I knew it was useless to hear Mr Gally asking me to find a way to make Michel be more "disciplined". I remember answering once that there was no way to discipline kids born under the year of the dragon - which we were all. This made some teachers laugh hard on that one.
I left NY at 13 years old and lost all contact with almost every classmate. Fortunately, thanks to the energy of Marc Zeitoun, André Casteybert and Michel Lepechoux, 33 years later, a classmate reunion in NY was realized! But Michel couldn't attend it because the dates matched with the opening of one of his new restaurants. I learned how his childhood energy turned to an incredible professional career. A profession where he could only be happy doing exactly what he wanted. With so much success as he did it with all his energy and "boiling creativity" at last recognized! What an impressive career. It is so sad indeed, at such a young age to leave. There are no words which can sooth pain. Only our support to the family and loved ones. Michel, thank you having shared a small path together."
