1999 (2) (July 2001 to June 2007 newsletters)Class Notes Archives----- From June 2007 AALFNY Newsletter ----- ● Luke Hornblower told us that he has been "working as a Client Service Associate at Western Asset Management Company in Pasadena, California since February of 2006. The company manages fixed income primarily for institutional clients." ● Oliver Shearer wrote: "It's nice to see that things have moved on since I graduated in 1999. Stopped by the Lycee a year ago, the new Lycee. When I look at the building at 93rd street every now and then I wonder why I didn't enjoy myself more while I was there. It's such a beautiful building, but I guess I was too busy worrying about what I had to do at school, which was a shame. Anyway, I am now at NYU, at the Paul McGhee Division. I am finishing my bachelor of arts there because I had stopped going to school for five years after having gone to Clark University for two. School has never been easy for me but it's going well now and I'm happy with what I am doing as an Art History major. I have worked in art restoration, more precisely paper restoration (posters), and that is what I plan to do for a living once I graduate from school. Before I make a living from it though, I plan to go to France or Italy to a specialized school to get very good at it. I am first and foremost an artist though (drawing, sculpture), studying the human body, in other words, i am not really interested in anything abstract, in any case, not as much as I used to be. That's all I can tell you for now...Oliver" ● "Jennifer Cazenave is a second-year Ph.D. student in French and Comparative Literary Studies, received her BA from Bard College in 2002. Her research is concerned with Post-World War II France, specifically in regards to the relation between language, silence, and memory. She is very interested in comparing cultural models of remembrance and the cultural means by which collective memory is established. She also writes and publishes poetry in French and in English." For a time, she was the American correspondent for the political journal Détresse et Ingérence. Jennifer graduated from Bard College in 2002, where she began experimenting with texts written in both French and English. She is currently working on a long text in French entitled Les Maladies de la Peau. She hopes to publish this text along with its translation in the Spring. 'Une Vie de Fuite Intime' is a work-in-progress. Her poem, 'III. Geographie, Une Terre Ecrite' was recently published in Matter." Some of my lycée friends would be quite surprised to discover that I am writing to update, as I prefer to remain under the radar, however I would like share some news about my wonderful classmates, and a little about myself. As always, I remain extremely close with Christine Phillpotts and Tahina Timothee. Christine has made me (and her family) terribly proud by being accepted into Harvard Business School for the fall of '07, and will certainly graduate at the top of her class as usual! (she’s going to hate me for saying that). Christine has already acquired her CFA, with little effort I must say, and will be leaving her position at JP Morgan Chase to pursue her MBA. Tahina is getting married this August to Rafael O. Perez, who is not a lycée alum, but who she met in high school while we were in the lycée. Christine and I are two of the Maids of Honor (out of 11 bridesmaids!), while Yves-Moliere Jean-Louis and Robert Rodney (lycée alums) will be two of the 11 groomsmen. Tahina is presently a tenured teacher at an elementary school in New Jersey, and is also the recipient of the selective KIPP Fisher Fellowship, which allows her to open her own charter school from the ground up; from choosing the building and location, to designing the curriculum! Tahina is an alumna of Teach For America. Over the past year two years, I have been able to reconnect with Martine Gren, who owns and manages, along with her husband and chef, Alex Urena, the popular restaurant “Urena”, where I have had the pleasure of dining on several occasions. Urena has been voted as one of the “Top 10 Newcomers” for 2007 by Zagat at number 3. Martine and Alex have a lovely little girl, Gisele, who is just as cute as a button. Additionally, I have reconnected with Laura Mamelok, and we try to meet every now and then despite our busy schedules. I even ventured out to Brooklyn recently to visit her in her new neighborhood! Laura works in publishing presently. Furthermore, I keep in touch occasionally (through “Facebook”) with Nancy Pena, former surveillante when I was a student, and who I also replaced as a surveillante myself in 2000, during her leave of absence. She appears to be doing well and as perky as ever. My older sibling, Daniela, a lycée alum as well, is presently residing in Paris, where I visited her this past February. She is working for Club Med (corporate), and finishing her Masters degree at ESCP-EAP European School of Management. Also this past February, I had a housewarming bash in my new apartment, which lasted into the wee hours, attended by, among many others, Jamil Laraqui, Robert Rodney and Yves-Moliere Jean-Louis, (who I had not seen in almost 10 years!). I also try to keep in touch with Eric LeCalvez, Hichem Kerma, and Herve Horner. Recently, after browsing through the LFNYalmuni.org website, under “services offered by alumni”, I was able to find the services of Gloria Tulliu ('73), DVM. As a result, my mother brought one of my two dogs, Lola, to her clinic, and received wonderful service and attention. Metroville Animal Clinic may very well become our new veterinarian clinic! As for what I jokingly call, "random lycée sightings", I often see Mme Pointelet (3eme groupe English teacher?) in the old lycée neighborhood (95eme), as I wait for the M96 bus after work. Also saw Mme Carton (former kindergarten teacher?) chatting with another former elementary school teacher whose name escapes me, also on the M96 bus. Briefly saw Mr. Giacalone (former surveillant) a couple of months back, once again in the old neighborhood, and caught a flash of Alexander Kaufman ('99), who I have not seen in more than 10 years, exiting the 6 train. Finally about me: I currently work at Mount Sinai Hospital within the psychiatry department. I graduated from Fordham Graduate School of Social Service in 2005, with a Masters in social work. During graduate school, I interned at Sinai, within psychiatry, and was hired shortly after graduation. I am a licensed Social Worker, practicing with children, adolescents and their families. I wear many hats within the outpatient psychiatry clinic, working as a psychotherapist on site and in the field, participating in clinical research and facilitating multiple-family groups. I would love to hear from other class of '99 classmates, including those that left in elementary and high school. That’s all for now! J'ai mis en scène ma première pièce, "De bouche à oreille" il y a un an et travaille en tant qu'attachée de direction au théâtre du Lucernaire où je suis une des responsables de la programmation. I am a member of the team that does portfolio reporting for non- domestic institutional clients. In my spare time, I study accounting at UCLA extension." ● "Herve Horner still takes the time from his amped up schedule to play basketball on the courts of NYC. Referred to as "The Generator" there, he still maintains his undisputed reputation as the illest both on and off the court. High voltage!" -----From February 2006 AALFNY Newsletter----- ● Frédéric Voillemot wrote: "Dear all: After completing a bachelor degree at McGill University, I joined ESCP-EAP in Paris to pursue a master degree in Finance and Law. Having graduated in December, I will start working at UBS in Paris in March 2006 for a position in the Mergers & Acquisitions team. I will then head to London in a year or so. Also taking ancient Ancient Greek and German classes at Sorbonne. I also serve on the President's Council of St. Vincent's Hospital in New York." ● Emilie Rosanvallon graduated from Vassar in 2003 and is now studying to be a Clown at the Circus Center in San Francisco. She would like to know whether anyone has information on how to contact Rediens Collot, her old French Prof. at the Lycee. -----From Winter 2003-2004 AALFNY Newsletter----- ● Olivier Shearer tells us that he is currently an Art student at the Art Students League of New York, after spending two years in Worcester, Ma. He hopes everyone he hasn’t seen in the last four years is doing well. ● Shamina de Gonzaga works for a non-governmental organization affiliated with the UN (non profit field), and is also involved in commercial real estate. -----From July/August 2001 AALFNY Newsletter----- ● Sébastien Boutebel is transferring in Sept.
