--Editors' Class Notes Highlights-- --Editors' Class Notes Highlights--MESSAGES: ● We value all the messages that alumni have sent in, but the one from Daniel Vock and Colette Sluys-Newman who recently met, 54 years after they last saw each other at the Lycée, is particularly touching. (See Class of 1952 for details) ● Alice Croisier also wrote an extremely thoughtful and touching message that reflects the feelings of many of us, who take so much pleasure in renewing the friendships and sharing the souvenirs of our youth. (See class of 1981 for details.) IN THE NEWS: ● Philippe P. Dauman has been appointed President and CEO of Viacom Inc. (See Class of 1970 for details) ● Maria Teresa Mestre is the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg (See Class of 1973 for details) ● Jonathan Littell was awarded the 2006 Prix Goncourt for his novel 'Les Bienveillantes'. (See Class of 1985 for details) Back to Top --Class Notes Archives--Links for archives for alumni and professors/staff are listed on this page of the newsletter, under each specific class year. ● David Martin Herron taught at the Lycee from February 1967 through June 1968. He wrote: “I had just started my teaching career in 1966 with a very bad start working for the NYC Department of Education in East New York, Brooklyn. I jumped at the opportunity to teach at the Lycee for reasons too obvious to mention......Looking at your website, particularly the obits, I see the name of Mme. Cèrisoles; I recall many conversations with her, and I thought she was a lady of great class......I taught the children of two noted celebrities of the time: Paddy Chayevsky and Lauren Bacall. Ms. Bacall and her daughter Leslie Bogart (’71) were living at the time in The Dakota, not far from the school. I met one or both at an evening teacher-parent gathering. This must have been just before Mr. Chayevsky wrote the screenplay for "The Hospital." His son, whose first name I do not recall [Dan Chayefsky, '74] was in Sixth Grade at the time. It goes without saying that he was a most intelligent student, very friendly and well behaved.......[Later] I wrote exams in blue books at Purdue and NYU. However, to this day, I remember the giant feuilles used to write exams at the Lycee -- a strange thing to remember, but I do, perhaps it was the logistics of carrying and grading them......I look forward to reading your next newsletter.” ● Click on links below for news of Mario Bellati and Jean Heffer. -- On the Internet: Prof. Mario Bellati -- On the Internet: Prof. Jean Heffer -- David Martin Herron's website -- Professors and Staff Archives Back to Top 1940-1945● Betsy Jolas ('43) wrote: "This is a series, sponsored by the Paris Cité de la Musique, entitled "Domaine Privé" (Private domain!): Four concerts of mine and other works (orchestra, chamber music, film, etc.) meant to reflect my tastes and personality" (Please open the Pdf. file below for the full December 2006 schedule of Betsy's works.) ● Gabrielle Griswold, ’44 sent her regrets for not being able to attend the AALFNY May 31st reunion in NYC, and wrote: "How I wish I could get there for the reunion, but unfortunately I am so busy just at present that I'm afraid it's impossible. But another time, perhaps! I'd love to get to know some of you with whom I've been in correspondence but still haven't met. Think of me, and I'll be thinking of all of you. Special greetings also to my former classmate, Maurice Raviol, who I believe does plan to attend. When next in New York, perhaps I'll get to see you all. Best and warmest wishes." ● Pierre Blanchenay ('61) informed us that there was "a memorial service for all Barnard Alumnae in NY on Sunday June 11 at 10am. Jeanne Blanchenay Houghton ('52) who passed away in January of 2005, [was] among those who [were] honored and remembered on that occasion. Please dedicate a warm memory to her in your heart. He was President of the Lycee from the day it opened its doors and was active in his office at 3 East 95th Street until the age of 79. It refers to the fierce bouviers des Flandres guard dogs he raises, but the motto might well be Abady's own.....Abady's education was classically French, and when the family moved to New York he attended the Lycee Francais which was for him 'a terrible school. It was too rigid and I was basically rebellious.' Once when he was briefly living on his own after a spat with his father, he was called in by the headmaster and informed he was going to be expelled. My parents moved to Tulsa because of my father's job and because I was 16 when I started at NYU, I moved with them. I had the good fortune of having as my roommate Hafiz Nawabi, who was from Kabul, Afghanistan. He now lives in the Washington, DC area and we have remained extremely close, attending each family's special events. I graduated from Georgetown Law in 1965 and studied for almost two years at Johns Hopkins' SAIS, which I left to go into my brief military service. In the interim I got engaged after four months and married in October 1966, and Phil Schreiber, a Lycee classmate, was best man at my wedding. My wife is a writer of corporate histories and we have three children and eight grandchildren. I worked at the FTC for about three and a half years and then went to the Federal Reserve Board's Legal Division in Washington, DC where I stayed for eleven years. I left as Assistant General Counsel and joined Mellon in 1982. I have been here ever since and have been General Counsel for the holding company and bank since 1992. I have been on the Senior Management Committee since 1992. As General Counsel I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of Mellon's Legal Derpartment and supervise a staff of 69 lawyers at 12 locations. During my time at Mellon I have been responsible for the legal aspects of the Corporation's expansion in both the banking and nonbanking areas, regulatory matters, dealings with the Congress and state legislatures. I was responsible for Mellon's good bank/bad bank transaction as well as the Boston Company and Dreyfus acquisitions, and in dealings with Federal regulators on Basel II. I have also authored or co-authored a number of articles that have appeared in various law school publications. For five years (1994 to 1998) I was chairman of the Lawyers Council of the Financial Services Roundtable, a national trade association representing major financial service organizations. I was also vice chairman of the American Bankers Association's Bank Counsel Committee. I am also on the board of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestar as well as the Civic Light Opera in Pittsburgh. The restaurant had been owned and operated by the same family since 1950, and was one of the oldest family-run restaurants in New York City. Tis is an excerpt from a review by Bryan Miller (New York Times, 11/8/1991): "Owned by Jacqueline and Jean-Claude Lincy, 41-year-old Pierre au Tunnel has a warm, inviting aura. You pass through the spacious bar with several tables along one wall en route to the dining room, which has brick walls on one side, stucco on another, timbered beams overhead, red banquettes and a fireplace adorned with a giant stag's head. Don't expect lanky 22-year-old aspiring actresses as waitresses. The small French women who seem to have been here since the Eisenhower Administration appear timeless. They go about their ministrations with alacrity, although the pace can be slow sometimes at dinner." ● Considering a vacation apartment-rental in Paris? A quoi bon risquer d'autres tristes découvertes ? A quoi? I had not been there since I was 8, and decided to head on out there with my husband Chris and son Sebastian (born in February of 2003) to show them where the summer camp was where so many lycee students passed the lazy days of their youth. I also recently bumped into Jean-Luc Pedanou ('87) on the way to work in my neighborhood and came to find out that we have been neighbors (literally 2 blocks from one another) for the past two years! He let me know that Angele Yonke ('86) called him out of the blue just a few days prior. Kadiatou Cisse ('86) (married 2 years ago), now working at Winrock in Mali, came to NY for a visit and we managed to see each other. After 20 years, there were tears of joy and tons of hugs (which my son couldn't quite understand). We dusted off the old LFNY 50th anniversary yearbook, recalled all the stories and drama moments which either involved philo or boys and couldn't believe how those times were so much less complicated than the real life of being married career women trying to juggle it all. Lastly, I got in touch with Judith Hoenig ('86) who you all know lost her mother a few weeks ago, to present my condolences. She let me know that she recently married over the summer and was happy that her mother was able to be present. Hope to be able to reconnect with many more of you! P.S.
