Veterinary Internship Surprise

by Caroline Magasweran '02

I was starting out in my fourth year of undergraduate at Binghamton University. It came time to apply for Veterinary School. I had almost zero experience working in a vet clinic at that time, so I called every clinic in the city to find a doctor who would let me observe the routine appointments and surgeries.

Finally I reached the Metroville Animal Clinic located on the Upper East Side, who was the first one to invite me to come in without any hesitation. The following morning I went in and spoke with Dr. Rubio, who is one of two veterinarians working at the clinic. He asked me a few questions and found out that I went to the Lycée Français de New York, as had Dr. Gloria Tulliu '73, the other veterinarian. He did not tell her right away that we were alumni of the same school. Shortly after Dr. Tulliu and I met we found out that we both attended the Lycée. It made me so happy to know that the first doctor to accept me, without even knowing who I am, was a Lycée alumna.

The first time I sat through surgery was at the beginning of the summer. I thought everything was going to go smoothly until I saw a little female cat get de-clawed. I held her arm out as the doctor performed the surgery. A total of three minutes later I began to feel light-headed and almost passed out on the surgical table. I had to leave the room and breathe for a little while. I thought my vet career was at an end before it had even started. I came back into the room and heard a downpour of jokes about my situation. Then the doctor told me that only the best vets have the worst first-time experiences. Whether that was true or not I forced myself to believe it. Three bloody surgeries later I felt comfortable with it all. All it takes is trust in your doctor, and I can tell you that I am very confident in Dr. Tulliu's ability to help the patients. She is a very smooth-talking woman who captivates me when I listen to her, whether it is about a cat or her personal life. She was extremely personable and I loved going to the clinic to see her, besides witnessing the remarkable surgeries. She was great at fortifying my desire to pursue a veterinary career. She remained honest in explaining the difficulties of maintaining a private practice, all the while showing her motivation and determination to help the animals that come in her clinic almost every day. If you have a pet, I would certainly recommend her clinic. Also, if you are an aspiring veterinarian you should get to know Dr. Tulliu because she will be more than a great help. Dr. Tulliu, if you read this, thank you so much for your help, I really appreciated your generosity and how you went completely out of your way to helping me.
