Mme. Tina Hess (Prof. d'Anglais), Mme. Ariane Popa (Prof. de Maths), Bianca Pujol ('95), Jules Huot ('51), Bertrand Fournier ('98), Yvan Antich ('77), Georges Dremeaux ('71)

(Scroll to below the last article, for a full list of Lycee alumni and staff who are deceased, to our knowledge.)

MME. TINA HESS, professeur d'Anglais, passed away in May, 2005. Mrs. Hess taught English at the Lycée from 1947 to 1972. Her daughters, Ronnie and Sally Hess ('62 and '59), asked us to share this: "Mme Tina Hess was born in London, England, and arrived in New York City from Spain in 1940. She began teaching English at the Lycée in 1947. At first she was given the “petites classes,” the 8- and 10-year-olds, then the older children, and eventually the “Terminales,” where she taught Shakespeare and Emerson. While at the Lycée, Mme Hess received a BA from Hunter College, a degree she had begun work on at the University of London, then earned her Master’s in Education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. She continued at the Lycée until she retired in 1972, and was awarded the Palmes Académiques from the French government for her long service to education, to children and to France. She was a pianist devoted to both to chamber music and large orchestras. Her home was filled with the music of Debussy, Franck and Ravel."

One of her students, Colette (Barbara) Friedlander ('62) shared this with us: "Peut-être avez-vous déjà appris la mort de Mme.

Another student of hers, Pierre Sauvage ('62) wrote: "When I think of the Lycée, I think in French, but it is in English that I will say that I know I share with many others fond memories of Mrs. Hess. English had a very low priority at the Lycée in those days, but somehow Mrs. Hess got through, probably in no small measure because of her wonderfully soft-spoken and benevolent presence. I'm sure that my feelings about English and English literature were lastingly shaped by her. I'm sure we all extend our condolences to my friend and former classmate Ronnie and her sister Sally."

Another student of Mme. Hess, Jane Trigere ('67) wrote: "About my favorite teacher, Tina Hess: I just read about her death last year. Tina Hess, forever Mme. Hess to me, gave me in 4th grade (sometime around 1958), a gift no one gave me before and after for years and years. She singled me out and respected my intellect. One day she brought in some pages to class and was distributing them. I got mine and started reading out loud: 'Abou ben Ahdem, may his tribe increase, awoke one night from a deep dream of peace...' She glanced at me and said: 'I thought you'd like that.' I have remembered this exchange all my life. And I thanked her for her gift many times over. I regret that I never told her personally."

MME. ARIANE ALINA GAVRILESCU POPA , professor of Mathematics at the Lycée from 1958 until her retirement in 1978, passed away in December of 2004. Her husband, Ervin, was Director of Finance at the school for many years. A number of her former students and colleagues attended a service, which was held on December 9th in Manhattan. We received the following communication from her two daughters, Ingrid (Popa) Fotino ('58) and Alda Popa ('63).

"Optimism, enthusiasm and joy characterized Ariane as long as we have known her. Born in Galati, Romania, in 1910, to the future Admiral Mihai Gavrilescu and to Alina Rosetti, granddaughter of one of modern Romania 's founding fathers, she spent much of her childhood on ships, especially after her mother's death in 1916. Whence her life-long love of sea and navy.
In Galati, she and her sisters had a French governess who was responsible for inculcating in them a deep love of French culture. She was raised by the French nuns of Notre Dame de Sion, where she reveled in music (she played the piano with great ease and possessed a musical ear that had her dubbed the "pillar of Mère Gisèle's choir"). She also excelled in mathematics, which she would eventually teach, both in Romania (where she ranked at the top of the national competition for higher mathematics educators' certificate), as well as at the Lycée Français de New York, until her retirement at age 68. The French government bestowed upon her a teaching award she prized very much, the "Palmes Académiques".
When only 19, she met her future husband, Ervin Popa, with whom she would form a most devoted and loving couple for over 75 years, cherishing their two daughters and two granddaughters.
Although an enthusiastic U.S. citizen and passionate New Yorker (we joked that she was American well before setting foot on these shores!), she instilled in us a deep love for Romania. For 18 years she headed the luliu Maniu Relief Foundation, in part to help maintain Romanian traditions.
Three times in her lifetime her family lost everything it owned; and our escape from Soviet-occupied Romania, which she initiated, led to almost two years of incarceration in communist Yougoslavia. Yet she unceasingly remarked how beautiful and happy her life had been, and wished us all the same luck she had had. Her luck, of course, was in the way she perceived life. She never gave up hope, no matter how daunting the trials she encountered, and maintained her characteristic calm, dignity and optimism.
Ariane accepted to come to Colorado in the summer of 2004. There, for the few months she had left to live, she filled our lives and those of her caregivers with an inspiring example of courage, optimism, understanding and forgiveness - and luminous love, even after she became too weak to speak. This may well have been her greatest gift to us all."

BIANCA PUJOL ('95), passed away in a car accident in Brazil, Thursday May 26, 2005, at the age of 27. Bianca was the daughter of Jean-Claude Pujol ('65) and Claudia Goncalves da Souza. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday June 25 at 11 AM , at Saint Vincent de Paul Church, 123 West 23rd Street, NYC. One of her classmates, Stephen McGrath ('95)wrote: "Bianca Pujol était quelqu'un d'exceptionnel. Je n'oublierai jamais son sourire et sa joie de vivre; elle était toujours aimable, toujours prete a assister ses camarades. Le déces de Bianca est une tragedie pour tous qui l'ont connue, mais sa vie trop courte restera un bel exemple. Mes condoléances a sa famille et ses amis. J'offre mes prieres pour elle chaque jour."

● The wife of JULES HUOT ('51), Mrs. Judith Adams, informed us that Jules passed away on April 15th, 2005.

Paul de Montmorin ('98) wrote: "BERTRAND FOURNIER ('98) passed away on January 8th 2004. For his time at the LFNY, we will remember his gift to laugh about and ridicule anything. He is survived by his parents and a brother, Guillaume Fournier, class of '00."
................................................................................

Liane Coleman ('78) wrote to inform us that she was told that YVAN ANTICH ('77) died in a car accident last year in Washington, DC. He left a wife and two small children. She had no further information.
................................................................................

Ronald Grelsamer ('71) informed us that GEORGES DREMEAUX ('71) passed away on May 2, 2005. Ronald wrote: "Georges '71 was my classmate going back to 7eme. He was born June 4th 1953 and died May 2nd 2005 (it hurts just to type out the words). Ironically, his father passed away from a similar disorder shortly before Georges began to feel ill. I don't know that Georges ever thought of himself as being particularly sick. He was upbeat and filled with plans and projects until my very last phone call to him. He was the quiet type - at least while in school. He was very artistic at a time when there was really no place for such a person at a French Lycee. He flourished when he left, designing beautiful jewelry and devoting much of his spare time to his first love: drawing birds. He and his wife Myra travelled the world in search of this or that bird, which he would photograph and then draw.
I've enclosed a picture that goes back a little while as well as a little tribute."
Ronald's tribute:

Dear Georges,
We’ve been friends for oh so many years
And it should have been for oh so many years more.

We joked, we laughed, we disagreed, you made a difference in my life.

And then time went by.
Perhaps the phone was busy once or twice
And even more time went by.

And now you’re gone.

You were the one we were supposed to grow old with.
When the children were grown and we had time to kick our feet up
You were the one we were supposed to talk to about music and cameras and birds
And all those things you loved so much

And now you’re gone.

There was at least one song we could agree was good
And now the lyrics of that song come to mind.
It’s about a man, a woman, and a lost love.
But the woman could be a metaphor for life.

“Your day breaks
Your mind aches,
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you.

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

Your day breaks
Your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said
Will fill your head
You won’t forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A life that should have lasted years”

Good bye Georges
We miss you.
