Betsy Jolas wrote and invites her classmates to visit her website: http://www.betsyjolas.com/

Being "PC", back then: FROM YEARBOOK, CLASS OF 1943: " N'ayant pu, en dépit de recherches laborieuses, trouver une seule personne répondant vaguement à ses vues esthétiques, et ne voulant point offenser les gouts de l'humanité, la classe de Philo./Math. se dissocie résolument du projet puéril autant que chimérique de trouver 'la jeune fille idéale' dans l'enceinte du lycée."

Tanaquil (Leclercq) Balanchine, '47 (Deceased 12/31/2000)

Anne (Boulin) Robertshaw ('47) wrote and told us that Marie-Claude (Boulin) Solvay ('46) lives in Brussels and has an apartment in N.Y. and that both Léon Lambert ('46) and Françion (Garreaud) Sonnery ('46) are deceased. She also told us that Tanaquil (Leclercq) Balanchine('47) "pursued a career in ballet which she attained. She was a prima ballerina with George Balanchine whom she married. Unfortunately at the peak of her career, she came down with polio which ended her career. Her husband eventually divorced her, and I believe she wrote several books, some on cats. I believe she is deceased."
[Editor's note: Anne is correct. According to "FactMonster" on the Internet: "Tanaquil Le Clercq: French-born, willowy ballerina who frequently and gracefully performed the works of Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine, to whom she was once married. She contracted polio in 1956, at age 27, and became paralyzed from the waist down. In an eerily prescient performance in 1944, Balanchine choreographed a short piece in which he played a character named Polio, and Le Clercq was his victim. Died: Manhattan, 12/31/2000"]

Wendy (Kupsick) Sherman writes: "It is a pleasure for me to receive your bulletins and read about the new institution. The Lycee has meant so much to me in my lifetime. I got out of the fast-paced life of a TV new reporter to do something quieter, but with a great deal of meaning for me. I work in non-profit at the American Civil Liberties Union, and it has been fascinating. I also continue to dance competitively, for those of you who know of my rather insane passion. My two children are thriving, but I will let my daughter speak for herself if she so chooses, as she is also a Lycee alumna, class of 1988."

● From Lynn Bochner: "When my wife, Madeleine, and I retired down to Florida, we enrolled in CERT classes: Certified Emergency Response Team, under Homeland Security. We followed nine evenings of training, including First Aid, CPR, Search and Rescue, Triage, Fire suppression... We've also gone back to the Fire Department for recertification and refresher sessions.
As you probably know, this was Florida's year of the multiple hurricanes. So we got to put our training to good use, though not the kind of activities we expected...actually much less traumatic than we were prepared for. Mostly we waited out the storm, and then donned out hard hats and brightly colored vests, grabbed saws, and went around cutting branches around neighbors' homes, that were preventing them from getting out of their homes. I think the most important service we rendered was looking "official", giving people a sense of security.
All in all, out of 901 homes in our association, we lost 150 trees, some roof tiles, a few windows, quite a lot of our sprinkler system. But no one was injured, except in the pockerbook.
If anyone is curious, you might look up CERT on the internet."

Jill (Newman) Iversen wrote: "I would like to report that I have a 24-year-old son, Jeremy, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford. He is having a coming-of-age novel called 21 published by Simon & Schuster in March, although as my kid likes to point out, he'll be 25 by then!"

An award-winning documentary, by Pierre Sauvage ('62)
An award-winning documentary, by Pierre Sauvage ('62)

William Rodarmor ('60) was kind enough to send us these updates on two of his classmates:
<<Andre Vasu ('62), who practices thoracic surgery in Punta Gorda, Florida, avoided a close encounter of the blast kind with Hurricane Charley, whose 150-mph winds tore his roof and demolished his medical practice building. In his very grim photos, his office looks like a Baghdad bombing. Good thing André himself had the good sense to be 1,400 miles away in Rhode Island. He writes: "We watched on the radar screen as Charley went directly over our house. My wife Peg said, ‘Good thing we weren’t home. I would have been out of there at the last minute and would have been hit in the head with a flying 2 x 4.’ My F-27 sailboat went airborne, flipped 180 degrees, and smashed on the dock, amputating three ten-inch-thick pilings. Need new roof coverings but contents of home OK. Medical office destroyed. But all is well and we will come back to fight another day.”
Geoffrey Morson ('62) has made a splash of another kind, by contributing half a dozen biographies to the massive new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. “All my articles are on fairly specialized subjects,” Geoffrey writes from Cambridge, “but Hamilton will have a quite wide appeal.” That’s putting it mildly. An 18th century diplomat, Sir William Hamilton was famous both as an art collector and a jilted husband. His lovely young wife Emma took up with Lord Nelson, the already-married hero of the Nile, and they all then lived together openly in London. “That would create a stir even today,” writes Geoff. “In 1800, it was an outrage, but people had to swallow it. Nelson was the military hero of his era and was needed to defeat Napoleon at sea (which he did). It would be as if Laura Bush ran off with Dominique de Villepin. Or Madonna with Bill Clinton. Or Dolly Parton with Vladimir Putin.”>>
[Editor's Note: We don't know whether Geoffrey knew it when he quipped about Laura Bush and Dominique de Villepin, but Dominique is a LFNY graduate, class of '71.]

Ronnie Hess wrote: "I'm in France for the year and will reconnect with Colette Friedlander and Violaine Coulondres. Colette has remained a close family friend over the years……I'm teaching school in Dijon for the year and will return in May to the United States where I am director of communications in the Division of International Studies at the University of Wisconsin. I'm in Dijon not only to teach English at the "college" level but also to do research on French education. Reconnecting with some anciens eleves would be interesting for me. Similarly, if you know of any anciens profs who are in France I would also like to get in touch with them. My mother, Tina Hess, who taught English at the Lycee, lives in Florida and will be 94 on October 24. She still thinks fondly of her many years at the Lycee."

My family and I went to celebrate our son's high school graduation in Antigua for one week. I wrote Nancy, who resides in Martinique, while I was in Jordan, not really expecting it to happen. But it did! She came with her husband, Marcel, during the weekend we were there. 32 years we have been writing to each other and we finally met. It was a happy reunion that happens in dreams, but we were fortunate that it was real. We talked so much trying to fit 32 years of things not said in our letters in two days. Best wishes to all who attempt to reunite."

Veronique (Stanek) Rousseau-Vellones wrote that she has put up for sale her auberge in the Loire Valley ("La Bergerie") and as soon as she finds a buyer, will be moving to Provence.

Clarissa (Gyorgy) Fetrow shared this with us: "Hi Everyone, I began at the Lycee in 1965 and attended from 11eme through 5eme. I was recently surprised to see that my artwork graces several of those old yearbooks. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I loved a lot of my classmates from around the world, I loved the beautiful buildings we were in (did you know that most schools don't have marble ballrooms?), I loved being affirmed for being smart and eager to learn. But it was also pretty repressive on many of our spirits, as I recall. Still, I am proud to have gone, and I remember a lot fondly. I have loved language ever since. I have loved the combination of charcoal grey and navy blue ever since. I taught French, English and Spanish for a few years. Now I live in Seattle, with my husband David and our 18 month old daughter Miranda. I have a quieter life than I had in New York, with fresher air, but fewer museums. I love it here, and visit NY for a few days every couple of years. I rarely speak French these days, but when I do, even when I'm stumbling and groping for words, I'm told I have a beautiful accent.
I'd love to hear from those who remember me. Take care, and defeat Bush November 2nd!"

Lisa Stern wrote: "Since I last checked in my husband David and I have had a daughter, Yonina, born on Sept. 1, 2003 (Labor Day!). She is now nearing 15 months and idolizes her big brother Asher (5 1/2 yrs.). I've also gotten another post-doctoral degree, in group psychoanalysis. My life is very full between my family, my private practice, teaching, and writing."

Hope to see Lycee friends soon. I've been fortunate to keep up with Annabelle Cone, Natalie Yates and Dominique Richard, whom I saw last summer on the Riviera! All the best to everyone."

Riccardo Guariglia shared this with us: "Dear "camarades",
recently I have given to "Class Notes" a brief summary of my life,
since I left the Lycée Français, in 1975. I now have to update my
personal information, as I have just moved brom Bruxelles to Brasilia, where I am now the Deputy Head of Mission of the Italian Embassy in Brazil. It happened that I didn't know almost at all Brazil, when I arrived here last month: it is a fantastic country (rather a continent!), and Brasilia is an amazing and incredible city to live in! The family is OK, and the three children are attending the "Lycée Français de Brasilia", respectively in 3ème, 4ème, and 6ème (all classes which I have attended in New York, from 1971 to 1975!). I look forward to hear from all of You! Cheers from Brazil, Riccardo."

● From Greg Dale: "Where to start? After graduating from Princeton in 1981, I spent the next ten years acting and directing in NYC, then moved to Tokyo where I've been for the last thirteen years. I'm acting and directing here, too, in Broadway level plays with Japanese theater companies. I'm also doing lots of commercial narrations in English and French (something I owe to my eight years at the Lycee). Three years ago, I married Yayoi Miyamoto and am living in bliss in our new home. No kids yet."

Fred Kapner reports he has moved from Milan to London to edit European political and general news pages at FT.

Lianne Coleman sent us this amusing news about the Lycee: "I don't know if you are aware of this but I was at the Bronx Botanical Gardens the other day and they have the Holiday Train Show until Jan 9, 2004 which depicts replicas of historic landmark buildings in miniatures made out of leaves, branches, mushrooms etc. There in front of me was a replica of the Lycee Francais on 72nd Street. I nearly fainted dead away. I hope everyone has a chance to see it.It was really cool."

Dr. Osbert Blow ('79)
Dr. Osbert Blow ('79)

Osbert Blow sent us this update: "Osbert Blow MD, PhD, FACS, left after premiere to attend Columbia University where he majored in French language and literature. He received his MD and PhD from Duke where he met his lovely wife, Barbara Bennett Blow, RN, MSN, PNP. They traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia for his internship and residency in General Surgery. After a one year fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, they moved to San Antonio, Texas where Dr. Blow directed the Pediatric and Emergency Surgery program at University of Texas Health Science Center. He has published several manuscripts and book chapters and is a member of numerous Surgical Societies and was recently inducted into the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Blow has been the Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas since August 2003. He and Barbara have four children. Alex, 12, Sam, 10, Audrey, 7, and Madison, 2 years old. His and Barbara's biggest interest is spending as much time with their children as possible. Osbert's mother still resides in New York City and sees the Lycee students all of the time and remembers when her son was at the school."

● From Holley Stewart: "Although Holley Stewart is Class of 1979, she left the Lycee after 4eme when her family moved to Washington, DC where she transfered into the American public school system. She holds a bachelor's degree in French history and literature from Harvard University and a master's degree in medical demography from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
In a former life (pre-master's degree), Holley trained and worked as a professional actress based in New York City. After earning her MSc., she moved to South Africa and worked with the Medical Research Council of South Africa and the Africa Center for Health and Population Studies in Kwa-Zulu Natal on a school-based dual protection intervention against unplanned pregnancy and HIV infection. She returned to Washington, DC and worked with the Population Council on an evaluation of UNICEF-supported prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs in Rwanda and Côte d'Ivoire) and on five research studies on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. She is currently the reproductive health advisor on a USAID-funded project focused research and analysis, advocacy and dissemination and capacity building in Africa at the Academy for Educational Development."

Hillary Ray shared this with us: "Well, it has already been over a year since my last note when I reported I was pregnant with our second child and about to visit New York for work. My visit went fine but I was very busy with meetings with US regulators and lawyers and visiting my parents while tired from the pregnancy, so apologies for keeping a low profile. I did have the great pleasure of seeing Harriet Gerard ('80). Harriet, when are you going to update the newsletter? Upon my return, Ella was born without much fuss and, to our good fortune, has been a good sleeper ever since. However we regularly wake up for her older brother! Sean starts at the Lycee Francais here in December on his third birthday. Sydney, has been called “Frappuccino heaven” by Bill Bryson, deservedly so. There is something to be said for not having to wear socks most of the year. Sydney also follows the English model for schools and its private ones are mostly single-sex which I did not want for Sean or Ella. The public schools teach Italian and not French. I was very keen that sean and Ella learn French as speaking French has been a great asset for me in many ways. Australia is very remote and I think a grounding in French language and literature give a child an opening into another culture and all its treasures such as literature, art and music. Fortunately for us, there is a French Lycee here that follows the curriculum set by the French government and that by the Australian department of education. There are, surprisingly, perhaps many French people living in Sydney and the school is expanding.
Work is fine though busy (no matter who wins an election, there is always work for lawyers!), and I have not been able to be involved in many human rights projects this year. Family takes up most of my time. Mark, my Aussie husband, works part-time and helps a lot with the kids. I guess I am lucky that things are a bit more relaxed here and we do not have to work all the time.
I have asked my sister Sabrina ('85) , also LFNY, who leads a very exciting life in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to send in an update, and my other sister Ashley ('89) , LFNY and lives in NYC, to write in. I would love to hear from any of my Lycee contemporaries and hope everyone is doing well. Write in with your news!"

Astrid Martheleur writes: "Hello everyone! I can't tell you how great it was to read all of your updates. While much has happened over the years, I feel that all can be summed up in a very abridged paragraph:
Since leaving the Lycee, my professional vocation has always been in fashion- specifically launching new designers to the domestic/international market. Currently, I am the VP of global sales and merchandising for Diane Von Furstenberg for the past 5 years. I recently moved to London for the company, where I met a wonderful (younger!) man. Perhaps this time a runaway-bride I will not be! I have no children-yet- but have 2 great dogs- one of which belonged to my brother Didier, who very tragically passed away in the summer of '97 at the age of 28. That having been said, times have certainly been tough. For the most part though, I feel very blessed with my life and look forward to more alumni updates!"

Lance Brown is a Dermatologist practicing in NYC.

Anne Bax writes: "After 7 years of thoroughly enjoying consulting, I decided to join the University lifestyle again (in the Continuous Education Division). The idea, of course was to recover the work-life balance that would give me more time to be with our 3-year old twins, Natalia and Julian. Living in Mexico makes it difficult to attend reunions, but I would love to hear from old Lycée Friends."

● "Olivier Poncet says hello to all of his old friends from the Lycee and hopes that they are all doing well. He is extremely happy to finally be back in NYC after a 5-year stint in the suburbs (pas recommendé), and is now living a mere two blocks from the new Lycee building (this was on purpose: he is looking forward to sending his beloved daughter, Colette, who turns 2 at the end of October, to the Lycee starting next year, and is currently going through the interview / application process, etc). He has been working at Deutsche Bank in NYC for over 7 years now, and is currently Business Manager for the Private Client / Private Wealth Management division). It was thrilling to see a message from Ken, with news of him and Ali, two of my best buddies (and first band-mates) back then, along with Steve Siegel of course (long live Chestnut Dessert). Would love to get back in touch with any of my old classmates if any
