In Memoriam
Mme. Michele Samspon, François Cailliarec ('68)
Mme. Michele Samspon passed away on June 26, 1999. She was a physical education teacher ay the Lycée for a number of years and then Surveillante Generale. Mme. Nanette Cerisoles wrote: "I met Michele Sampson on my arrival at the lycée in 1958. She was then the girls' physical education teacher, and later on became Surveillante Génerale. As such she was in charge of discipline, but always concentrated on the well-being of "her" students. She had a long commute from Long Island, yet would arrive early, go for coffee at the nearby deli, and chat with the kids, listen to their problems and advise them as a mother or a big sister would. She was devoted to the school and, I believe, left her mark on everone who came in contact with her.
Michele was my friend --we shared our experiences and confided in each other. She retired to Florida where she enjoyed the sunshine and the company of her daughter who lived nearby. She also made great use of her green thumb, and went in for competition bowling.
Through the years we kept in touch and I last saw Michele in 1992 when we visited her on the West Coast. She was as I remembered her at the Lycée, always laughing and full of pep. Needless to say that her passing was a great shock to me. We were both of the same generation. With her vitality, I could not conceive of such a sudden end. I often reminisce of the wonderful years we both had in that institution that we loved so much."
François Cailliarec '68 died of meningitis while on vacation in Turkey in the summer of 1994. There was no forewarning. He became unconscious while traveling in the hinterlands of the country, was transported on the back of a truck to a hospital in the nearest city and passed away while in the hospital a day later. François was quite successful in the management and design of computer network administration systems and worked for several large corporations including Chase Manhattan Bank and Coopers Lybrand. He left a wife, Cathy, and child, Jason. His parents currently reside in Quimper, Brittany, France. His brother, Pierre Cailliarec, lives in New York and works in the film industry (as of 1995). We thank Josh Cohen '69 for bringing this sad news to our attention.
