He was the beloved brother of Marie-Lise Gazarian (’53). A passionate aficionado of old houses, some of which he restored, he divided his time between Manhattan and the quaint hamlet of Orient, which he so loved. Born July 8, 1932, in Paris, he came to the United States at the age of 15, when his older brother Jean joined the United Nations. Pierre, who studied at the Lycée Français in New York, Queens College and Columbia University, began working for Renault USA at an early age and was its president, when, in 1987, he chose an early retirement. Pierre was a Member of the Knickerbocker Club. In 1990, he was made Knight of the Order of Merit by the French Government. His true passion, however, was for writing. Pierre touched people with his words, and made them laugh and cry. He saw the world through the sensitive and inquisitive eye of a poet. Pierre wrote poetry in French and in English and one-act plays. In October 1999, he became a columnist for The Suffolk Times. Steven Stepanchev, the Poet Laureate of Queens and his former professor, wrote of “If you See my Dog, the Name Is Moon,” an anthology of poetry Pierre dedicated to his long-time friend Rita Martinsen, “He is the keen observer of the contemporary scene, which is reflected in vivid imagery and ironic wit.” Jean Valentine wrote of his poetry: “Pierre Gazarian’s grieving, often somewhat surreal poems resemble folk tales in their abstraction and sense of inevitability, and tenderness, too.” Pierre’s recent book, “A Seagull on My Roof”, came to life in memory of his beloved wife, Nancy Cheadle, an exceptional illustrator and portraitist, who passed away in 2012, and of Jean, his generous late brother and mentor. A collection of 168 columns written for The Suffolk Times, it reflects his curiosity and respect for every living thing, whether human beings, animals, or objects." Born in Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine in 1934, Eva immigrated to the U.S. with her parents and sister, Ruth, in 1940. Raised in Manhattan (she was a West Side girl), Eva attended Grinnell College in Iowa, where she majored in journalism and wrote a column for the college newspaper. While home on a summer vacation in 1953, she contracted polio. Her case was severe, with paralysis of her right side; the doctors held out little hope for her recovery. Rather than send her to a hospital, her mother chose to nurse her at home and she eventually made a full recovery, returning to college and the sport she loved, tennis. She retained her fluency in French her whole life, along with a love of good food and excellent wine. In 1960 Eva and Tom started their married life in Pennsylvania, later moving to Blackstone, Va. and finally to Richmond, where Eva worked as a tennis coach and pro ….. Eva trained and mentored players from around the world for VCU's women's tennis team for many years, until she retired. She herself was an outstanding athlete, before and after the bout with polio, excelling at tennis, ping pong and golf. Experiencing the war as a child, leaving her home at age 6, starting a new life as a refugee, those experiences shaped her and made her tough, someone who suffered fools poorly-if at all. But to those she loved, and for causes she believed in, she was a generous, fierce and loyal advocate. Sharp-tongued and intellectually nimble, in a fight, you'd want Eva on your side. She embraced the world, and it will be duller without her.” (http://www.legacy.com/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=163798047 Memorial service) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ● JOCELYNE (BENOIT-BARNE) HOSSENLOPP ('53) (LSY: Terminale in 1953): "Thomas Hossenlopp, son époux ; Hélène et Pierre-Alain Morandi-Hossenlopp, ses enfants ; Sabrina, Xavier, ses petits-enfants ; ainsi que les familles parentes et alliées, ont le chagrin de vous faire part du décès de Madame Jocelyne HOSSENLOPP née BENOIT-BARNE survenu le vendredi 5 février 2016 dans sa 82e année. I know I benefited from his knowledge. Throughout his long career he showed great flexibility in adapting to and embracing the many changes which affected his profession. He showed leadership making those changes changes. Stony Brook University was fortunate to have such a professional among its ranks. David was a good man. He will be missed." La passion et l’enthousiasme avec laquelle elle fit ceci en son plaisir et envie de partager ceci était très symptomatique d’elle. Après une belle fête de Noël avec ses enfants et petits-enfants, le vendredi 6 janvier, sa maladie cérébrale incurable refit surface. Sending lots of love to the entire family.” Syrine Chaalala (’99): “When I heard the news I was heartbroken. Alexander you probably don't remember me, but you have had a tremendous impact on my life. I was in 5ème when you were in 1ère I believe, and we were in a "Spectacle” together with Mr Lumbroso. I was bullied all the time by people in my class but also the older kids. Every time that has come up in my lifetime, I would say how there were these brothers, sons of "la surveillante générale des grands", that were so kind to me, and talked to me regardless of the other kids picking on me. I remember you, and Maximilian almost being protective of me (that's how I felt regardless if it was intentional) even one time making sure I got on the bus ok after some kids threw my bus change in the snow... Anyway, your beautiful soul has been in my heart my entire life - giving me so much hope as a bullied child/teenager, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Syrine, from Tunis." Camille Hottlet-Aubecq (’94): “My heart goes out to Alex and his family. May you find solace in such difficult times.” Frédéric Potter (’98): “Endless love and well wishes to the Gomez family.
