(For more details, click on link below.) ● Yoka Verdoner (Prof. d'anglais, années scolaires 1962 à 1967) wrote: "Greetings from Oakland, California, where I have lived since 1978. Although I thought I was taking just a one-year leave of absence in 1967, things turned out differently. Instead of one year, I lived eight years in Israel where I taught at the Hebrew University and the University of Tel Aviv, then three years at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, where I am originally from. I finally went to California and made up my mind to stop moving. I went back to school in order to learn a new profession and have been a practicing psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1983. I remember my years at the Lycee with great pleasure and clearly remember many of your names and faces. This week, Jean Pierre Harpignies ('68) suddenly turned up and we had a most enjoyable lunch together after about forty-four years or so. I would be delighted to see any of you who travel this far west, or to hear from any of you. Thank you, Roger, for making all this possible!" Editor's note: Ms. Verdoner is a psychologist in Oakland and is the co-author/co-editor of Signs of Life: The Letters of Hilde Verdoner-Sluizer from Nazi Transit Camp Westerbork, 1942-1944. The book is "an intensely personal account of [her mother's] life in a Nazi camp in Holland from which trains carried Dutch Jews to their death in the extermination camps of Eastern Europe. These eloquent letters were written by a thirty-three-year-old housewife and mother of three young children...." I have retired as head of school after a career in French American and international schools in New York, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles and Portland." ● Brigitte Nahon (Prof. de dessin, années scolaires 1996 et 1997) wrote: "Since 1997, when I won an international competition of an outdoors sculpture for E.D.F. [Or, click on link below] I still think of The Lycée Français de New York. I keep a very strong memory in my heart and very often, I think about those years. asking myself what a child became, what he/she is doing, and how are the staff with whom I worked? I keep such good memories of some parents as well. I hope, thanks to you, that the link can be maintained." Easier of course to travel from Bretagne to Paris, than flying to New York…. Though all this happened a long time ago, the Lycée remains vivid in my memory. My elder brothers and younger sister arrived in October after the beginning of school. We came from Martinique and I had completely forgotten the English language during our stay there, though I had started school in Washington DC and had grown up as an American child. So my schedule at the Lycee in 6ème was special: Our first hour was always American language and history, in order to get back to fluent English, and I did not take Latin like all the others. After two months, all the English language which had remained hidden in my brain came forward, and that was it. I still have the book of American History in my library. Going to school as a child: I remember my friends well, and when the bell rang when it was time for recess we would rush to the stairs, and immediately look for our boyfriend. It was something natural: We would hold each other's hand for a while, pronounce a few tender words, and that was it. Then we would play very noisily in the yard, and seek those who collected “camcards.” I have kept my album all these years. It was our way of making an exchange, a child’s business. Some valuable camcards were prints of famous paintings, which opened a door into the art world. So if any of you are still interested in camcards, come to Belle Ile, visit me, bring yours and we shall "exchange again !" (See In memoriam section of this newsletter for further details, or click on link below) ● "WESTPORT-March 10, 2010: As a child, Waldemar Kasriels wasn't allowed to play outside like the typical young boy. His parents didn't want him to engage in 'rough and tumble activities' for fear he might get hurt or even lose his life. But his life choices have been just the reverse. The owner of Normandie Beach Club on Furnace Point Lane devotes his life to giving others the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor world. He believes in opening up this world to everyone — but especially for children. Kasriels, now 73, was born in France in 1937. His father was stationed in New York City as a representative of the French government responsible for promoting French products in the United States. The family moved back and forth between the two countries with some frequency, and the boy grew up bilingual. A GLORIOUS VIEW: By the age of 20, Kasriels supported himself by picking up odd jobs in New York City. In time, he assumed the responsibility of running the sports activities of the Lycée Francais there.... During winter breaks, Kasriels led ski trips and gave skiing lessons. In the summer, he rented facilities in New England to run as summer camps for children. Some of those were less than satisfactory, for example the one that featured a dining room with a collapsed roof..... Eventually, Kasriels began to search the real-estate advertisements for a camp on the market. He left Vermont and headed for the Adirondacks with little knowledge of the area. 'I crossed Lake Champlain in September and found this place in Westport.' The property's main house had once been the home of Chicago department store magnate Marshall Field....... 'In 1970,' Kasriels said, 'I opened a camp here for children aged 6 to 16. Many of my early campers came from the Lycée Francais.....' SUMMER RESORT: By the mid-'90s, Camp Normandie had fallen prey to the conditions affecting all childrens camps. Economic problems, the changing interests of children and the costs of maintenance ate away at their very existence. So it was time for a change. Kasriels turned Camp Normandie into a summer resort featuring a sandy beach with an array of waterfront activities, tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, informal lakeside dining at the Coco Café by the waterfront and a more formal dinner environment up the hill. The camp cabins were extensively renovated and converted to individual and family rental lodges......His wife, Molly, takes care of camp registrations and the finances.... 'When I walk around this property at this time of year, I realize how much I have done to make it as beautiful as it is,' Kasriegs said. 'Yet the beauty of this land was here long before me and will be here long after I am gone.' First two weeks in the south (Lyon, Vence, Avignon, Nice, St. Tropez) and then two weeks in Paris. For the first time we rented an apartment in Paris in the 6eme Arrondisement. Our apartment faced Rue de Buci, our favorite street in Paris. While my wife Carol took classes at Alliance Francaise (having taken private lessons for two years from a teacher in Pittsburgh), Carol decided to learn French at her somewhat late stage in life and really enjoys it. At the same time I worked out of Reed Smith's Paris office on Boulevard Henri Poincare. I also traveled on the Eurostar to London and made two presentations at our London office and another one in our Paris office. Paris is much less frenetic than London, which is fairly close in speed to New York. The pace of life in Paris is much more reasonable and humane The food in France was as usual, so enjoyable. There is a lot Americans can learn from the French in terms of the pace of life. » (Jean-Jacques also contributed an essay based on his visits to the La Brea museum.
