Upon joining Facebook recently, I reconnected with a lot of former students and have been delighted to discover how all of them have fared professionally and personally. Since the Lycée, I have done a number of things, including retail management, advertising jingles production, sales and project management. I moved to New Jersey in 1993, and I have a 20-year old son who's a sophomore at Ramamo College of New Jersey, in the music program, studying to become an audio engineer/editor. I have done many things since 1985, but I have never forgotten my three years at the Lycee or the friends and acquaintances I made when I taught there. ● "Claudine Herrmann ('44) became famous in France with he publication of "Les Voleuses de langue" in 1976. Her much-quoted book is now recognized as a modern classic of feminist literary criticism. Nancy Kline's welcome English translation captures the clarity and passion of observations that go beyond books to boudoirs and boardrooms. Herrmann charges that language is the fundamental means by which women are oppressed. Their education forces them to parrot masculine discourse, often gets them dismissed as chatterboxes, and silences their real lives. Women who desire to express themselves creatively are obliged to "steal" language or to invent one of their own. Based on readings of major texts in literature, philosophy, and the social sciences, "The Tongue Snatchers" illuminates how men and women differ in their experiences of words, work, space, time, love, and sexuality." Since that time he has lived and worked at one time or another in the U.S., Spain, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and the People's Republic of China, among others. Back to Top 1954● Avis de Décès: From a friend and neighbor, who wrote this to us: Sylvine Van Merlen "passed away on April 2, 2009, at Pleasant Bay Rehabilitation Center in Brewster, MA. She succumbed after a lengthy battle with cancer and left no survivors. Prior to her illness, Sylvine had served for many years as a housekeeper/companion par excellence to my elderly (age 94) neighbor and we both became very fond of her. In fact, we were at her bedside at the moment of her demise. She will be sorely missed, as will the entertaining (but often conflicting) accounts of her life with which she regaled us...." (See In Memoriam section of this newsletter for newspaper obituary, or click on link below) ● Elizabeth (Reiss) Baecher told us that she took a Caribbean cruise last year with her son and family. It's taken me an awfully long time to do anything more than check out the site here and there, and I found myself on the "What ever happened to" list so many times that I wanted to finally put to rest the rumors of my death, which, to steal a line from Mark Twain, have been greatly exaggerated. I'd love to become reacquainted with my classmates, including those who beat me up, usually for good reason, and, of course, to meet other Lycee alumni." ● Bennington, Vermont - February 27, 2009 "Inside an old manufacturing facility in Bennington, there is new reason to celebrate. Catamount Glass president Alain Karyo says, "We usually never lay off people. We have not done that in 30 years." This month, Catamount Glass is marking its 30th year in business. Alain Karyo started the company solo in a basement, with just $10,000 in sales. Now he has more than 20 employees and $1.6 million in product going out the doors. Karyo says he's gotten offers to move his business to China, but has turned them down because he wants to keep those jobs in Bennington. "It's almost like a family business," he explains. "People who have worked here worked a long time. Our decision was to make sure they stay and have a job." The company has an unusual specialty: making laboratory-grade heat-resistant glass. It's high-tech enough for use by scientists, but homeowners use the glass gravy separators, microwave popcorn poppers, measuring cups and more............." >> (http://www.ericseydoux.com/imagesnomi/dpma08bis.pdf) -- Evelyn (Wahl) Soum's website Back to Top 1965● "Before reviving her long standing interest in the relationship between food and culture by acquiring a Master’s degree in Food Studies at NYU, Renee Marton worked in restaurant kitchens for 15 years, including twelve as Executive Chef. While at NYU, she taught in culinary schools in NYC, always with an emphasis on gastronomy, as well as textbook and technique. In addition to teaching, Renee has been published on subjects as varied as the history of the grilled cheese sandwich, American confectionary companies and restaurants, commercial fishing, immigrant students and French culinary vocabulary, and the history and prevention of foodborne illness." Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me." ● In June, 2009, Mira Schor celebrated the publication of The Extreme of the Middle: Writings of Jack Tworkov, edited by her and published by Yale University Press. His latest book, "Delusions of Normality," hits the ground running and speeds along until it crashes into an explosive "Can one bear too much reality?" conclusion. All of us compare ourselves to others and wonder how we fit in, and if we are “normal.” In his new book, Delusions of Normality: Sanity, Drugs, Sex, Money and Beliefs in America, J. P. Harpignies marshals considerable evidence to persuasively argue that we Americans are collectively far less mentally stable, far more corruptible or financially irrational, far druggier, far more covert and kinkier in our sex lives and far zanier in our beliefs than we generally admit, and that a great many of the unspoken assumptions that underlie our media’s discourse are seriously at odds with the reality of people’s lives and ideas.....Harpignies has written and edited a number of independently published books, covering everything from biotech to psychedelics to 'political ecology.' And following up on this recent development, I will be reactivating the dormant television program that I used to produce five years ago, Foodology. This time however, the program will be produced as a grass roots and community project. I am still playing guitar with my band, Burning Moonlight. Another musical opportunity has presented itself, I am now part of the Unitarian Universalist Church houseband, performing Sundays for what is called the Contemporary Service. This is a lovely addition to my schedule. My work for the Veregister Co. continues as the USA learns more about the benefits of carbon credits as a vehicles for methane mitigation I serve on the board of Sembrando Salud, a not for profit group that plants gardens and orchards in low income neighborhoods to provide nutrition for kids at risk of obesity and Diabetes. Born in New York City, Tristan and his family moved to France where his parents provided an environment with a strong emphasis in classical music. His talents surfaced at the age of seven when he began to reproduce J. S. Bach Sonatas by ear on the piano. Formal instruction came shortly after. Years of traveling around the world have led him into the exploration of many rhythmic styles and melodies from Africa, Asia, India, South America, and the West Indies. These sounds have impressed and enriched him, reflecting authentic and original styles in his writing and playing. Tristan also brings his world-class production and unique sound to a CD, World Affairs, and now Altered States.” (http://www.sonicgarden.com/SONIC-WEB/artist.cfm?artistid=5038) ● Edwige (Lozach) Verne shared this with us: "First attended Parson's but decided I did not want to become a designer (still painting). Then got married and had first daughter. Then created first restaurant with sister and parents in Westchester in a house built by JP Morgan. Then became gym teacher. Then got divorced in a really strange Santo Domingo court...Then had a passionate affair with my Nikon and with New York. Then got married again and moved to Fontainebleau, France to buy Hotel Napoleon....Then had a few more daughters and wrote thesis for my masters in Astrology. Then learned that I was a bigamist and had to divorce first husband a second time. Then sold hotel, and bought furniture store in Brittany... Then sold that and worked 2 years in real estate (France). Then had a sea foods restaurant on the French coast. Then moved back to US and worked for Bloomingdales for 2 years selling designer clothes. Then bought one more restaurant on the beach, sold it and separated from second husband to live alone. Then became manager for Barnes and Noble cafe (Starbucks)....merchandise manager for another Barnes and Noble...and ASM for previous Barnes and Noble. Then became happy grand mother. Then bought and now in the process of selling last restaurant...Then decided to live with second husband again. WELL: During the last 45 years, I have stayed friends with my Lycee best friend and another 15 others for at least 30 years, including my other best friend from France. I have read hundreds of books, traveled all over the world, attended an incredible workshop given by the Dalai Lama, had an unexpected swim with a couple of sharks, sat on a thief so he could not get away, went broke a couple of moved 14 times, spent way too much money on totally ridiculous things, survived an intoxicating love affair, and was sitting in the dentist chair during the first blackout in New York. Finally I have decided to go back to school for the fun of it. (Unless I decide to write the story of this life because this incarnation has not been dull.) I had a blast during it all: I laughed, cried, loved, got fat and skinny, had a stupid doctor mistakenly tell me I was dying, and I am probably the only living being to have eaten spaghetti in an Egyptian pyramid. I still love fashion and art and eating, I am a vegetarian, I don't smoke, don't drink, don’t even drink caffeine because my life is nutty enough without them... I do believe that bad moods are a total loss of time. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ARE UP TO." -- Interview: C.C. She didn't grow up in a religious family and rarely attended synagogue. When she was in her 30s, Singer began reading the Bible and pondering what it means to be a Jew. That was the beginning of a journey that led her to rabbinical school and later to Riverside's Temple Beth El, which last year named her its rabbi. Today, at 56, Singer is more content than she's ever been. She feels fulfilled being able to dedicate her life to helping others, reading sacred texts and preserving Jewish traditions. 'It's not entirely different from TV,' Singer said. 'I went into TV to make the world a better place. And that's why I became a rabbi.'..............." Creator Alexander George, a professor of philosophy at Amherst College, has here compiled some of the site's most intriguing and widely relevant Q&As, covering, in the "grand tradition of human reflection," perennial topics like death, love, ethics and the origins of each. More than that, George seeks to make clear that philosophy is, indeed, for the thinking person, but that everyone is a thinking person. Organized broadly into four parts, entitled "What can I know?", "What ought I to do?", "What may I hope?" and "What is man?", the answer to each question ("Why isn't it just as good to be happy as to be sad?") is attributed to one of 22 contributing professors, who do a fine job, in short passages, of establishing a personal link to what could otherwise seem distant or abstract theory. Questions range from the near-universal ("If God's will is ultimately unknowable, then how can we know what is morally right?") to the situation-specific ("Is it morally wrong to tell children that Santa exists?") to the cheekily subversive ("Should the tolerant tolerate intolerance?"); there's lots of material here to enlighten and provoke, especially for those just getting their Socratic sea legs." I have compiled a manuscript that forms a significant addition to the history of the immediate postwar period and reveals the unique experience of an exceptionally charismatic and intelligent G.I. who eventually returns to the U.S., attends Columbia University and becomes a prominent New Yorker (He owned the furniture chain Bon Marché). Each experience has brought her one step closer to her emergence as a soulful new voice on the music scene.....Equally comfortable with R&B/soul production as she is playing her acoustic guitar, Temtchine has delivered a rich collection of original songs that manages to evoke the vocal stylings of Beyoncé even as it suggests the quiet storytelling of John Mayer or Paula Cole......She grew up in New York to parents with diverse cultural backgrounds, got mixed up with the wrong crowd, and left home in her early teens to see if the world had a better path to offer. From her escapades on the streets of Spanish Harlem to singing in cafes on the sidewalks of Barcelona, Chloé’s gypsy road was paved with real-life experiences that resonate with all of us, and she set those events and those feelings to music......Upon her return to America, she gained a deep appreciation of 70’s soul, R&B, hip- hop and world music at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, then set off to pursue her musical career and hone her sound, which blends classic soul music with timeless pop....." I am a junior at Columbia College majoring in Philosophy and Economics. Jessica is also a junior at CC and is majoring in Economics and Hispanic studies. About a year ago, a friend came to me with the idea of organizing in the Columbia University setting a student association where students from both the French community and those with an interest in the broader French-American community would be able to meet each other and discuss contemporary issues in a comfortable environment. Our main objective was to welcome world class guest-speakers from a variety of domains each semester who would discuss and share with us the lessons they learned during their international careers. Outlining the challenges of what intellectually crossing borders represents, our guests help us better comprehend diverging views on a given subject and distill the essential compromises that can exist beyond these often cultural differences. Events take place with a limited number of people and with a strong interactive component so as to establish an informal, privileged relationship between our guests and our members. We decided not to be directly affiliated with Columbia (though we now organize our speaker events at the Maison Française of Columbia) and we also organize social events that are aimed at having fun and exchanging ideas in a setting where French culture is most manifest in the form of good wine and cheese. Although we pride ourselves in having a growing number of members who were alumni of the LFNY, our appeal is not limited to the Columbia community, and motivated students and young professionals who live in the NY area in general are actively present at our events. We invite you to visit our website [by clicking on the link below] to check out the guests who already came to speak with us and the ones who are coming next semester, and please contact us if you are interested in becoming a member and getting the latest news on our events."
