The Commander, Home from the Seaby Edward Gaskell ('47), CDR,USNR (ret.)THE COMMANDER, HOME FROM THE SEA The Commander is home from the sea. His days as navigator are over now. No more sun lines, star sights, anchor bearings. No courses to set or log entries to write. The chronometers he will no longer wind, The fog horn he will no longer sound, The charts will be corrected by someone new, His dividers, parallel rulers, sextant and stop watch Are all put away with his salt-tarnished uniform. His time will be taken by other things, And his orchids when they bloom Will make him smile. Our Town, April, 2009 |
