They are Hilda Beer Grauman ('42), Martin Beer and Jean Beer, whose elder sister Lise (also a lyceene) was here when I arrived a year-and-a-half ago, but who passed away sometime last year. We are all good friends, and HIlda, Jean and I host a French-speaking table in our dining-room once a month, which usually numbers about 10 or 12 participants. It was also quite wonderful to hear from former classmate Ludmilla Alexeiff ('44), who now goes by the name of Svetlana Rockwell. Eliot's The Wasteland, which he translated and which has had a never-ending impact on his dramatic writing." Brought up speaking French, I was schooled at the Lycee Francais De New York, then the Spence School from which I graduated in 1948, followed by the Finch College in NYC for two years. My early multi-culturalism included experience in both the Russian Orthodox and Catholic religious teachings. Except for childhood art classes in school and a vague watercolor class years ago in Rhinebeck, I have had no art training. I have been studying with Betsy Jacaruso for five years and I prefer to paint flowers in the studio, rather than en-plein-air. I have always spent a lot of time in museums and galleries studying art. During the sixties and early seventies I had the chance to meet many artists, including Barnett Newman, Rothko, Ken Noland, Helen Frankenthaler, Bob Motherwell, as well as others. With family in England, France and Argentina, among other places, I travel frequently to these countries. I also spent time in Kenya in the seventies, enjoying animals in the wild. Among other interests are music, gardening, cooking, reading, watching movies, travel, photography and studying new subjects. I speak French, Spanish, Italian, English and some Russian. Over the years, I worked in retailing, advertising, public relations, promotion, and editorial writing and editing. My last long employment was for the Conde Nast Publications, where I worked on Vogue, House & Garden, Mademoiselle, in editorial or advertising/promotional jobs. And finally I helped create the international division of Conde Nast in the US, representing and supplying materials to their many publications world-wide." A long time ago. [6eme and 5eme, 1944 and 1945] Our family name is BENECH, and my father was in the French Navy. This is just to let you know [that] I live on the island Belle Ile en Mer. Hectic and busy during July and a great part of August. But I like visitors once in a while, or a chat on the phone with people from New York or the States. I was in South Carolina in April 2008 (one week) at Furman University's Music department with Tamara Matthews, soprano, who teaches lyrics there and who asked me to come and improve the French pronunciation of her students." -- Class Notes Archives: 1946 -- Class Notes Archives: 1947 -- Class Notes Archives: 1948 -- Class Notes Archives: 1949 -- Class Notes Archives: 1950 Back to Top 1951● Ellen (Ehrlich) Mimran wrote that her "interest in the theatre continues apace as she defends the new and hilarious London transfer to Broadway of "Hitchcock's The 39 Steps" at The Cort Theatre, now a nominee for several Tony awards." ● John Clarke nous écrit: "Rien de neuf. Upon leaving the Lycée, I went to work in the printing department of JC Penney's main office in New York. I obtained a BA and MA and was promoted to technical writer, editor, project manager, and researcher, staying on even as the company resettled in Dallas, Texas. I never married, nor had children, but I enjoyed the company of several girlfriends. I left Penney in 2000, and I am currently building my way up in the fine arts field (contemporary art). It's Gauguin all over again. Or Pass Go again, but don't collect. (I've attached some pictures from an exposition in Gardanne that begins May 6 and ends on May 13, 2008 -- a one-man-show.) My contribution to art involves the notion of 'repainting.' (Why paint fresh when you can repaint?) Repainting deconstructs images -- offering an ironic view that obtains surprising effects and strange spectator reactions. At first, I hodge-podged image transfers and painted them. Recently, I began restructuring and painting 'abstract-representational' multiple impressions. At other times, I attempt to get into the skin of a painter and create a 'sequel' or 'remake' of his work ('pastiches' in French). For example, I painted the underside of the Demoiselles d'Avignon. I also envision a sequel of the Raft of the Medusa ('La Remise en Mer'). All this, of course, remains positively insane, but whoever said we preach to the sane?" ● Dr. Alison Estabrook, Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, was interviewed for an article in the October 24, 2005 issue of Newseek, entitled "When Women Lead -- As a growing number of female executives rise to the top, how will they change the culture of the workplace?" She said: "You must make sacrifices. You work hard and make very little money in the beginning. And you have to believe in yourself and not listen to other people who try to discourage you from reaching your goal. There weren't a lot of female breast surgeons when I started out, and when I told a friend of my mother's that I was going to become a surgeon, she said, ‘I would never go to a female doctor.’ I didn't react. You have to have self-confidence. You have to know where you want to go. Women take criticism more to heart than men, and I think that can be a problem. After I finished my residency and I was starting to be an attending surgeon, I realized that there was a tremendous gap. Women complained that it took so long to find out their test results. It was so easy to resolve. At our center, women can get mammogram and pathology results within hours. I'm proud of that. Things have gotten better for women in the last 20 years, but I think we still need to figure ways in which we can have families and still have leadership roles in our jobs. I think that's still a big problem. Early on, I decided not to have children. And I don't really regret it. I think about it, but I just couldn't have done what I have done and had children. It would have been impossible. And I love what I do, I really do. I know people are going to say, ‘Well, she's probably saying that because it's very hard to admit that you made a mistake,’ and I do think about it. I have a lot of nieces and nephews, and I'm the godmother for a couple of kids, so it's not like I don't have any children in my life, but I'm sort of happy not to have the responsibility. I do see a lot of people have kids and they are very, very happy, so I don't know that I'll ever be able to answer whether it was a bad decision, really, completely honestly. This is probably why some of us chose to avoid contact and to remain incognito and distant). I also once saw on the Lycee site a picture of all the boys in terminale of '75 wearing skirts. I wish I could find it online but am having difficulties....That pic was supposed to circulate amongst us (students) only but it obviously travelled around! I believe I am the only one who shot the series (I used to print my own pics). There may have been someone else with a camera that day but I am not sure as to whether that person actually shot anything (I vaguely remember the person being afraid to be caught shooting!). As 'fun/funny' as the pic may appear to be, it was a celebration for the end of school and one also at a deeper level. We girls and female teachers were not allowed to wear trousers. In the cold and windy NYC winters, you can imagine that layers under a skirt did not help much. When we slipped on ice, we had nothing to protect our bums or thighs. Wearing tights didn't do the trick as the ice tore them when we fell down. Some of us had nasty bruises and abrasions (from slipping) which could have been prevented by wearing trousers. The wind also lifted our skirts up, exposing us, and I remember perverts following some of us home and verbally abusing us. In order to protect ourselves from the cold. bruises and the perverts, we had to get permission first for our female teachers to have the choice of wearing trousers. Once that permission was granted, we then asked permission for the female students. Yes, the Lycee was VERY strict!" ● Having seen Baina's message, above, Nayl Driss wrote: " In answer to Baina and to complete the vision of our generation at the lycée, our class was an important part of the movement to allow pants for the girls, ever since our year in seconde, as well as colored tights. The winters of '73 to '75 where cold ones as I remember. The rules of the Lycée were not very realistic as to the realities of the weather. The regulations had been very strict up to that point but we worked to make the administration understand that we had a word to say in our lives at the school. I do not know if things were made easier later, but we had a fairly tight group, at least at school. Remember that at that time some students were excluded for expressing their opinions or for not approving of the tough attitude of the administration. It was an important time of change. The plan for the guys to wear skirts was an attempt to put into perspective the "necessity " of the uniform and was also our end-of-the-year joke. It originated as a bet between Riadh Ladjimi and myself to come in skirts on the next to last day. Why then? Because that was the last time we had our philosophy class with Mr Choquet. But then we decided it would be much more fun if we convinced all the others to join in the event, and after some discussion we all came to the idea that the guys would come in skirts and the girls in pants and ties. Most of us met at an apartment a few blocks from the lycée and walked all together from there, in order for the guys to find skirts their size --I think it may have been at Cathy Treboux's but I am not sure. Everyone from both classes made the switch, except Pascal Agenet whom we did not ask because of his medical condition and we did not want to impose on him. There may have been one or two other photographers who, I think, may have some pictures. The picture that Baina is referring to was put in the yearbook (1976) the next year by Philippe Duleyrie who decided to do another year of terminale. Some of the younger kids made fun of us but we dared them to do it also and in the afternoon one or two of them did. Mme. Magaril accepted our joke-- she had to as we left her No option. As a final note to all of this, you must also remember the couscous I had brought to the "after the bac party" that was held in Marina Baudoin's apartment a few days later. Growing up times are not always necessarily happy times. We may pick up where we left off with some, but with others we may hesitate. All of us have changed and it is helpful to see how we have come through the years. Our class group has had three big reunions, but I have not been able to attend for many reasons. I have kept in touch with some, and lost contact with others as I suppose we all have. " (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=96696690) -- Franck Desbhy's website -- Class Notes Archives (1993) Back to Top 1994● Agathe (Apparu) Snow's work is being exhibited at the Southampton (NY) Parrish Art Museum until the end of the 2008 July 4th weekend. After 3 months in the Netherlands, I went to Lebanon where I was hosted by my LFNY classmate Aline Sara ('02) and I developed and led a workshop on "Youth and Reconciliation" at the American University in Beirut. In January, I moved on to Thailand to begin my second international placement. During my three months there, I focused on the role of young activists in the Burmese pro-democracy movement and worked with several organizations in Northern Thailand, from where most Burmese organizations operate in political exile. In April, I began my third and final international placement in Liberia. I am working with Youth Action International (YAI), an NGO that works to support and empower conflict-affected youth in Africa, and am overseeing the development of new programs in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Over the course of the year, I have kept a personal blog documenting my experiences at www.allaboutevedlmk.blogspot.com. [Click on link below to access Eve's blog] On another note, I'm thrilled announce that I was recently accepted to my top choice Masters program: the Sciences Po/ SIPA dual degree program in international affairs. I will spend my first year at Sciences Po in Paris and my second year studying at the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York." ● Our AALFNY Class of 2002 representative, Ana Ortiz, was kind enough to write to her classmates and to send us these updates, below. » " He is also cited in Liberation.fr.
