● Jane Trigere ('67) wrote a touching story about Maia Hellès, the girls’ dance movement/exercise teacher for about 15 years between 1960 until 1975. See Alumni Creative section, or click on link below.)

Cécile Bourlange (former Librarian for the primary school, 1996-2005) wrote: "I just went to see the Alumni website, and I spent hours going from one link to another! Its priceless to be able to have news from people who shared a very special time in a so particular and multicultural place as the LFNY.

(From Radio France, http://www.radiofrance.fr/chaines/france-info/chroniques/expat/index.php?m=3&chro_diff_id=2522)

Jalila Menasseri (former Prof. de CE, 1996-2005) “is a teacher with an education degree from Education Nationale. She has been involved with theater for more than 20 years. As a student, in Montpellier, she was the co-founder of a theater company ‘le TAUST’ that showcased numerous plays in the city and its surroundings. In 1993, she participated for 2 years in a radio show, broadcast on ‘Radio Clapas’, a famous independent radio station of Montpellier. In 1996, she moved to New York City and worked as a teacher at the Lycée Français de NY for the next 9 years. There, she produced numerous plays with her students (Les Fables de la Fontaine, Tistou les Pouces Verts, La Guerre du Feu, Portraits Dansés...) involving dance and video. In 2005, she left the LFNY and joined the faculty at Language and Laughter Studio, in Brooklyn where she created a French theatre class for kids. The class has been a great success and won two prizes at the festival ‘Première Scène’ held at LFNY, in March 2007. In September 2007, she founded her own theater company for kids: ‘La petite Troupe’ Jalila is currently taking classes at the HB studio.” (From: La Petite Troupe, http://www.lapetitetroupe.com/en/page1.html)

Dorrit (Zucker-Hale) Cohn ('42) is the Bernbaum Professor of Literature at Harvard University. In 1999, the Modern Language Association of America awarded her its seventh annual Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary, honoring her for her book of comparative literary theory, The Distinction of Fiction. Cohn said the book began as a series of essays written for various periodicals. "One was on Freud's case histories, one was on Proust, and I decided that they all fit together. I added some chapters to the essays that I published, and it seems to be considered a real book. I am very pleased about the award, of course," she said. (Source: The Harvard Crimson, http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=98992)

Juliette (Breffort) Blessing ('45) is Professor Emerita of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Mary Washington (L.ès L., University of Lille; D.E.S., University of Paris; Diplome de L’Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris; Doct. U., University of Dijon)

Gabrielle Griswold ('44) wrote: "Here is an update on my current life at the continuing care retirement community called Kendal-at-Longwood in Kennett Square, Pa. I arrived here on 16 Nov. 2006, hence just about one year ago, and am absolutely loving the place, which is full of active, vital and interesting residents, and gives one both the privacy and the mental stimulation one needs.
Among the first people I discovered living here when I moved in last fall was Hilda (Beer) Grauman, who was two years ahead of me back in those Lycée days. In addition, I found that her older sister, Lise, and brothers Martin and Jean Beer were also here (Lise, the eldest of the four, has since passed away.) She and I decided immediately that we would start a French table, and we did. It meets once a month, with a turn-out of between eight and sixteen people, and all conversation held there takes place in French. A new Chinese resident due soon to move in is very excited about the opportunity of speaking French here because he went to a French Lycée in Shanghai!
Within the past several months, thanks to the New York lycee's alumni ssociation I have also heard from (and been in e-mail correspondence with) Svetlana Rockwell ('44) Guess that's all for now. Must dash." (Also, click on link below for a poem by Gabrielle-'Full Moon Rising')

William Rodarmor wants your French literary recommendations. He has been asked to edit an anthology of French short stories about specific places in France for a book to be called France: A Traveler's Literary Companion. It is part of a series of lively anthologies published by Whereabouts Press in Berkeley, California, that includes Chile, Japan, Australia, Costa Rica, and a dozen more countries and cities.
"I'm both an editor and a translator, so this is a dream job for me," says Rodarmor. He is looking for French short stories or excerpts from novels written in the 20th century, up to 5000 words long. "They can funny, sad or in between," he says, "and be about any part of France except Paris -- I have lots of those already. The stories must be contemporary, and I specifically need more women writers." Send your suggestions to rodarmor222 [at] aol.com.

Dominique de Ziegler wrote: "Thanks and congratulations for your unabated dedication to the news letter. 'It keeps them young', as they say.
Speaking of which, the fate that overspills its share of surprises, every now and then, has done it again to me. This time, it is the gift of an unexpected extra chapter that I have been asked to add to my professional life. I was recently offered the direction of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Hôpital Cochin in Paris. Until then, I thought that I was terminally parked in Geneva, left there to rot in the pristine Alpine air through some sort of one way self- decaying process. As I felt that I could not refuse to be Médecin des Hôpitaux and Professeur des Universités, as the title pompously declares, and move over to the big city to boot, I accepted the offer and decided to come to Paris as rapidly as possible. Vive la France! So I'll be officially taking my new job in September 2008, joining many Americans who are flocking to Paris again. Up until now, it was not too common for the University of Paris to call in people from abroad, particularly at the twilight of their lives (yes my dears, that's where we are right now). But since it happened, so be it! And by the way, the star spangled banner is being happily waved all over France these days, from the Elysée Palace on down.
Right now, we're getting ready for the move and the kids, having approved it by unanimous vote, are taking the lead to be first in Paris. We bought a house in the 15th arrondissement (they are getting hard to find in town lately), where we'll be moving in March or April after les travaux."

Jane Trigère shared this press release with us: "Deerfield, MA. Nov. 15, 2007: Local artist, Jane Trigère, has a showing of her art in a New York City museum. Her collective-collage, called “Encompassing Sukkot-Collected Memories,” is on view until January 31 at Yeshiva University Museum in the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th Street). (See www.yumuseum.org for more details.) Trigere’s collection of anecdotal Sukkot memories come from all over the world. She searched for and made objects to represent these memoriessometimes literally, but also evocatively. Bound together, these visualized memories form another sort of story. The viewer is an active participant. Can these varied memories encompassed within one frame bring visions of Sukkot to mind? Does it matter or detract from the experience if a few images are unusual or unfamiliar?.......Jane Trigère has lived in Western Massachusetts since 1991. She has worked with her husband Ken Schoen in Schoen Books and was the founding director of Hatikvah Holocaust Education & Research Center in Springfield. She has been active in the arts as a book binder, a graphic artist, a set and costume designer, a calligrapher, a cobbler, an eyeglass frame designer, an embroiderer, a painter, and a textile artist. She is currently collecting stories about ironing for another collective-collage."
Jane also wrote a touching story about Maia Hellès, the girls’ dance movement/exercise teacher for about 15 years between 1960 until 1975. See Alumni Creative section, or click on link below.)

She is a noted journalist. She went to Harvard, worked for the Washington Post, then was a Paris correspondent for Time magazine and is now covering energy and environmental issues for the Los Angeles Times and lives in LA. I remembered her because she sat behind me in class and (probably deservedly, bratty 10 year old that I was) hit me on the head quite hard with that massive American History textbook when I made some obnoxious comment about one of the Roosevelts. There's much I have forgotten about my childhood and adolescence, but I guess that jolt on the head helped anchor my memory of her."

Maria Oppenheim wrote: "I have moved back to a suburb right on the outskirts of Wiesbaden. It’s like a country village – very romantic -you drive through a forest past an inn where you can stop over for a snack. At night it looks like some leftover from a Robin Hood movie. But there is a train station bringing you to Wiesbaden in 15 minutes and there are buses too. There are practically no shops except a bakery, and a butchery which doesn’t interest me as a vegetarian. There is a fitness studio in the former farmhouse I live in. I don’t join in, I just hear the one-two-one-two and get a bad conscience. My horse is in the neighboring village with four others, changing pastures every couple of days in the summer and staying under a plastic roof in winter in a large paddock. We collect the crottin very correctly. Pam doesn’t get enough hay because she’s an old lady now and she doesn’t eat as fast as the others (and she knows when to stop!) I have similar worries with my almost 99 year-old Dad in Nice who doesn’t want to eat; or, let’s say he doesn’t feel hunger or thirst. I’m due there on the 19th and will see for myself. I will fly with my daughter Jessica (29 years old). She just finished her studies (Marketing and Chinese) and will get married to a Chinese fellow in May in Germany, and then again in October in Xian, China. I am learning Chinese now. My other daughter, 'Our Diva' Eve is 31 now. She will join us in Nice for a few days with her boyfriend Thomas, with whom she will be moving in shortly before Christmas. He’s Danish and lives in London. She’s up to more singing now. She is a Madonna look-alike and has just won a best look-alike contest, and will be on the BBC, where she will be competing with all the other look-alikes.
My job situation hasn’t gotten much better but I love what I’m doing. I’d love to sell more, but I might learn Chinese sooner than selling my artwork! I would need a gallerist/art dealer but I don’t know how to get the right contact. I get shy when it comes to those things.
I email Marc Salz every now and then. He put me in contact with a very nice colleague in Mainz – an artist who has shows nearby. So we go to each other’s shows…...I wouldn’t mind a reunion one of these days- when do you think we could organize something?"

Greg Gould sent us this announcement regarding his Foodolgy venture: "Greetings, Saturday the 15th of December at noon , Joy Am 1550 will broadcast the pilot episode of ‘Foodology’ featuring interviews with Eric Garretson, Director of the Downtown Growers Market Chuck O’Herron-Alix, veggiegrowers.net, and Robin Seydel, Membership Coordinator of LaMontanita Co-Op. Just to let you know what happened to me since then, a quick bio. When I graduated from the Lycee, I spent a year studying history at McGill University and then moved back to Europe, to London, and did a degree at the London School of Economics (LSE). After graduating from the LSE, I married an Englishman and we had two daughters (Saskia, now 29 years old and living and working in London) and Sucilla (24, living and working in Vienna). My family and I moved around the United Kingdom and spent a year in Norway. In 1983 I divorced and moved with my daughters, to Vienna, Austria. I have kept my married name which is Daniela Blyth. I began working for the United Nations, and am still here, still working for the UN.
Over the past 30 years, I have traveled extensively and two years ago did a life changing tour of East Africa, back packing my way through the bush most of the time. It was an unforgettable experience. In the course of our tour, we spent 3 weeks in Tanzania. I fell in love with Tanzania, and now return regularly. Since then, I am heavily involved in helping out orphans in the region of Arusha (the 3rd largest city in Tanzania), and my daughters and I are funding three projects and doing some private fund raising among friends.
That, in a nutshell, is what happened to me. I would love to hear what happened to my other classmates of the year 1974. If anyone wishes to get in touch, I would be delighted to take up old threads again. Please feel free to give my email address to all those who knew me. My experience in child welfare has been extremely rewarding in that I have had the opportunity to meet and work alongside some of the most talented, passionate and hard working people in NYC. With this work comes the challenges of working very long hours, and the responsibility of trying to improve the lives of children and families iinvolved with the child welfare system. I have to find the right beach so if anyone has any ideas, please do share.

I have stayed in touch with a few people from the Lycee (Catherine Treboux ('75), Marina Baudoin ('75), Nicholas Haimo ('76), Patricia Karkoch ('75)) and through the Lycee Reunion had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with many people I hadn't seen in a very long time. Is Judith Appelbaum actually Judy Kameny who is also one of my "early years" classmates (even before the Beatles were singing Yesterday)? All of this brings back some memories and we have reached that age where we start looking back.
I've recently moved to Nouméa, New Caledonia, in the south Pacific -and it is just so far away from everywhere that despite being tempted with catching up on all these people who share that cosmopolitan and multidimensional view of the world that LFNY education brought us, it is just too long of a trip - I should say voyage - to come and meet you all.

Riccardo Guariglia informed us that he written a book --Correspondencia Real, Rio de Janeiro-Napoli (1844) "that was recently published by 'Thesaurus Editora' of Brasilia (bilingual edition, in Italian and Portuguese)."

Greg Dale wrote: "Our daughter, Maya, has just turned two, and is the center of our lives. She's just starting to put sentences together, and even though she understands both English and Japanese, her little phrases are decidedly leaning towards the latter. The only French I can manage to pass on is when I sing "Frere Jacques" to her. We have taken her to Paris, though, and plan to visit often, so maybe she'll pick it up by osmosis.
Work-wise things are going great. I just directed an original Japanese play at a famous, 1600-seat theater in Nagoya, and had the honor of being the first foreign director ever in its 110-year history. Happily, the play was a big success. In June, I'll be starring in my first major role here at the New National Theater, the equivalent of Broadway. Most of my lines are in Japanese and English, with a smattering of German. I hate to admit it, but my polyglot experience at the Lycée really has come in handy.
I've also finally landed a literary agent, of sorts, in Hollywood, and hopefully he'll be able to sell my handful of screenplays. In the meantime, anyone out there who knows Nicole Kidman's dog-walker or Nathan Lane's masseuse and can get my script to them, your help is greatly appreciated.
Just want to let Alain Benzaken ('78) know that I'd love to hear from him. I tried to send several emails to him and they all bounced back."

Carla (Rosen) Vacher wrote: "This past summer, we finally moved into the first renovated part of our landmark farmhouse in the Moselle region of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, so will be happily celebrating Christmas at home! On the volunteer front, in addition to my work as elected secretary of the Harvard Club of Luxembourg and coordinator for the newly-launched Wharton Club, I became involved in local civic action as part of a planning committee for our village."

Here are some pictures from Ella's 4th birthday party. Mark (wearing batman t-shirt) and I (dressed in pink with wings, I am the assistant fairy) decorated the house to resemble a rainforest, as it was raining outside and we could not go to the park as planned. Look out for the paper tress and sun!! I had the kids put stickers of birds, butterflies and dinosaurs on the trees. It was a lot of fun. Also notice the handmade decorations: butterflies, cookies and popcorn garlands. Sean just had his 6th birthday 2 days ago. We had a science party and again had lots of fun in the park. Luckily for you I do not have the pictures back yet-- yes I am shooting with film again as I prefer the resolution.
Apologies to you all for being such a poor correspondent, it has been a challenging year, as they say!! Rose only started sleeping through a month ago, and I went back to work on a three-day a week basis in May. Wishing everyone a very happy holiday, thank you Roger for keeping the newsletter going and all your efforts. Hoping to see some of you in 2008. I would love to hear from others and how their year has been. Bisous, Hillary"

My father worked for Unicef, so we have travelled a lot. After New-York, we went to Thaïland, after Abidjan. Since then, I live in Belgium.
I have a master degree in family therapy and sexuality. Now I'm looking forward to find time to do a doctorate. But time flies and responsibilities eat one's up. My daughter is 17 years old, and next year will be entering a university for biochemical studies. I wonder where she got those qualities, for I'm far from being able to understand anything about that.
My husband, a journalist, and I have two guest-houses in the Belgian Ardennes. It was an old townhouse and village school which we have renovated in four years. You can see the pix at www.alacourderecre.eu.
Painting and writing are still my passion: 'Pas de fatalité' is a poetry book edited at the Dossiers d'Aquitaine, and paintings have been exhibited in different countries. You can see pix of them www.carolinedanois.com [or, click on link below]. I'm preparing two exhibitions in Madrid and France. Fabrice Griffoulière-Frere wrote: "Bonjour tout le monde! I've been following the LFNY newsletter for some time now, and have really enjoyed keeping-up with my old school buddies throughout the years. As for myself, I stayed in New york after the Lycée graduation, finding it quasi impossible to leave this insane city. I've been working in publishing for about 15 years now. In the last 8 years I was able to launch and develop a national magazine called "CITY", published out of NYC. It's a lifestyle Luxury magazine with a focus on Design, food, fashion and travel. If you haven't seen it, please visit our website at http://www.city-magazine.com.
Recently, I stumbled on a small film reel that I had shot at the Lycée back in 1983 or 1984. I couldn't resist transferring it to video so that I could share it with some of you. It certainly wont win any oscar or film awards, but it may take you down memory lane.
In it, you might recognize Jonathan Littel ('85) hanging from a tree and who just last year won the "Grand Prix de L'académie Francaise" for his book titled "Les Bienveillantes". You might also recognize Daniel Prieto-Castro('85) , AKA Daniel Lorca, and fellow band member Matthew Caws ('85) from the band Nada Surf. They released a new album last year called "the weight is a gift", which I highly recommend. Some of you might recall a band in the Lycée days called "The Cost of Living", our first foray into the music scene, with classmate Stéphane Dehais ('85) and our English teacher Patrick Thouron. It's really great to see that Daniel and Matthew kept their music ambitions going through the years, and that they have had such great success with it. On a similar music note, you might also recognize Alain (Nkossi) Konda ('86), who also followed the music trail, and also met great success worldwide.
There are more quick glimpses at our friends from back then in the video. My best wishes to all of you, et bonne continuation! The video clip can be viewed on my site (which is undergoing a major revamp) at: http://www.planetfab.com/pages_video/Lycee.html [or click on link below]

● The class of '87 held a reunion in NYC in August 2007, and in Paris in September 2007. For details, click on links below.

Christine (Oury) Foucher wrote: "My family moved to the Bay Area in August and is settling in. It is just beautiful here! I am director of communications for a software company located in downtown San Francisco and am working with a great group of people. My husband’s job transferred from Denver, and the kids are attending the Lycée Francais La Pérouse, a sister school of the LFNY. I am bummed to have missed our reunions, but hope we can make it an annual gathering (Nick and Micheline – are you up to it??!). I would have loved to reconnect with the group and hope we will have more opportunities in the future. Looks like everyone had a great time! Look me up if you are ever in San Fran!"

Sophie Gest wrote: "I left Morocco and I'm back in France for the next months... until I probably move to the US next!"

Nathalie (de Svastich) Clark wrote: "While living and working in New York for the past decade, it is through the fantastic 20 year reunion organized this past August by Nicholas Meltzer ('87) and Micheline Dugue ('87), that I have reconnected with even more '87 alumns. I have been married eight years to Scott, a Kiwi, and barely survived the French victory over the All Blacks during the last Rugby World Cup! We have a very funny little Caroline who keeps us on our toes and regularly out of breath as she gets ready to turn 2!!! I wish everyone the best for 2008 and the holidays."

Hortense Porcher wrote: "I'm not married but have an adorable boy named Hippolyte, aged almost 4 years."

● "Mark Shashoua, Chief Executive. Mark was one of the founding members of ITE in the early 1990s. He was Managing Director of ITE from 1995 to 1998 and then Chief Executive Officer until September 1999. He was responsible for the development of ITE’s international sales force from 50 people in 1994 to over 300 sales people in 17 countries worldwide. In the same period, sales grew from £8 million to £36 million. Mark’s management and leadership skills were conclusively proven by ITE’s continued profit growth in 1998 and 1999 under his stewardship, in spite of the unavoidable disruptions associated with flotation on the London Stock Exchange in March 1998 and the unexpected financial crisis in Russia in August 1998. Mark, with his father Roger, was awarded the ‘European Dynamic Entrepreneur’ in 1998 for his achievements at ITE by ‘Europe’s 500, the Association for Dynamic Entrepreneurs.’ He co-founded Expomedia Group and as the Chief Executive is responsible for the overall day to day running of the Company." Marie-Christine Loewenstein wrote: "Hello 1988 classmates! Do you realize that we have almost reached 20 years since our graduation day? Isn't that unbelievable? Unfortunately we are a bit late to organize a big retrouvailles class reunion but we should nevertheless think of doing such thing 'one day'. In the meantime, we are lucky enough to have the Alumni Association which does a great job, but also "Facebook". Don't forget it! Alors....à vos ordinateurs les amis et à nos retrouvailles prochainement!"

They are both learning French, of course. Nick was promoted to Partner in 2006. Robyn is busier than ever and has made tons of friends in Surrey where we live. The kids are great and growing incredibly fast. Stephanie and Taylor are 6 years old (they turn 7 in January). Stephanie is into gymnastics and horse riding. Taylor is into soccer and basketball. Cole is 5 years old and the happiest boy in the world. He loves science and numbers (math!) and is learning to play the piano. Cole is also heavily involved with soccer and is learning to play golf (he likes to drive the golf cart). Owen, our youngest, just turned 2 last week and is a very big boy. He runs after his brother and sisters no end. He has recently started expressing himself with words (sort of) and he is developing his own little personality. We are happy in our little village of Walton on the Hill in Surrey. Dad's commute into London is tough but it is really great to be in the countryside for the kids. We will be spending the Christmas holidays in Atlanta, GA and Charleston, SC this year. We wish everyone health, happiness and best wishes for 2008."

I came back to New York for Thanksgiving for three days but unfortunatly didn't get to see anyone; I just chilled with my mum, bro, girlfriend and dog. It was great, my mum cooked up a excellent feast and I ate enough chocolate to cover my face up in pimples for a week. :) hihihihi, silly me. And I'm not gay from living in San Francisco if that's what you're thinkin'.
College is fun -- I watch so many movies that I don't like them anymore, It's super noisy to live in a dorm, theres a really loud obnoXIOUS f#*%^er who lives right across the hall from me, babbling all night. My neighbor smokes pot with a bunch of people in the little bathroom we share, lots of people smoke a lot of pot here, drink a lot, people just go on all night giggling and laughing, it makes me wonder. At night, when there are no cars, we ride down the hills on skateboards, risking our lives, awesomeness though, the speeeeeeeed, the sensation, the bus ride back up; the intense math I experienced at the Lycee is slowly fading away as I spend most of my time building things, making water pumps, ping pong ball launchers, balsa wood bridges (mine held 65 pounds). I'm layed back, in the Lycee I felt like I was smarter than most people. Here I know I am smarter than most people. Haha, cocky bastard. No, but seriously, this school only accepts those with the money, they do not check SAT scores at all, and lots of the kids here are just dumb. But that's not why I'm here though. The stuff is relatively easy, it's really fun sometimes, and I know for a fact that I am the one working the least out of everyone from the Lycee, but let me assure you that I didn't know about it, and that if I choose to continue this major, I might go to a more challenging and serious school. But I like San Fran. It's funny, I call the place I work in the 'testosterone factory', 'cause there are mostly guys and they're all here for the cars. It's fun though, it's chill. Learn the word 'hella', it's hella chill, nutella is hella good. New SAT word. I express my sophistication to the others in my dorm by drinking tea and listening to classical music, hahaha, and speaking French, cursing in French, and some of the ladies really love it.
Here are some pictures of me, the pirate was for halloween, my dad came and it was great; he dressed as a monk, the jack sparrow joker was this random night, ten other people went for the joker look, entering for a contest for the new batman movie. Best group picture wins. We didn't win, but we looked pretty bad ass. Here is my teapot project, I got a C- on it but I think it's cool. It all started with a couple of designs, then after selecting one, a foam model was constructed, a model split in half down the middle. then I cast a sheet of acrylic over each half to make a mold, a one use only mold though. After removing the foam model from the mold, which means destroying the foam model, I poured instant cast into the model, which is two materials that you mix together, very toxic, and that acts like a liquid clay thay dries in half an hour. So my teapot ended up like a big block of clay-like material. After glueing the two halves together, sanding it down, sharpening the edges, I had to paint it, color by color, with a spray gun. It turned out nice, I wanted it to look like a rock that burst out of the ground from an earthquake or something, and give it lava like colors, as if it was lava in the process of drying. I also added little chunks of silver paint to mimic metal or crystals.
I really miss all of you and hope to be able to see you during the Christmas break in New York, if you'll be there. I'm coming back on the 22nd of December for 5 weeks. Love, Adrian"
