Class of 1959, On the Internet: Umberto PlajaUmberto PLAJA Ambassador of Italy to Kampala Born in Milan on 19 March 1941, he was awarded a degree in Law from the University of Palermo in 1966 and entered the Foreign Service in 1967.. He was first assigned to the Directorate General for Political Affairs, followed by postings in Saigon (1969), Athens (1972 to 1974), and Nairobi. Upon returning to Rome in 1976, he was again appointed to the Directorate General for Political Affairs. In 1980 he became Counsellor in Madrid and in 1984 First Counsellor in New Delhi. Back at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 1988 he was assigned to the Directorate General for Emigration and Social affairs. In 1990 he became Minister Plenipotentiary. In 1994 he was appointed Ambassador to Lagos and in 1998 Ambassador to Lusaka. In 2002 he served at the Directorate General for Multilateral Political Affairs and as Diplomatic Counsellor to the Commander of the KFOR troops headquartered in Pristina until 3 October 2003. Since 2004 he has served at the Directorate General for Sub-Saharan Africa as coordinator for development cooperation issues and for economic and commercial questions.
