You can see their ads in the Help Wanted part of the Services Offered by Alumni section of this newsletter. (Click on link below to access that page.) IN THE NEWS: ● H.E. Umberto Plaja is Ambassador of Italy to Kampala, Uganda. (See Class of 1959 for details) ● Author Jonathan Littell ('85), winner of the Goncourt Prize, was granted French citizenship, with a little help from another Lycee alumnus, former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin ('71). -- Help Wanted ads Back to Top --Former Professors and Staff--● Avis de Décès: Mme. Helene Schettino, who was the school's receptionist from 1975 to 1996, passed away in April, 2007. » ● Jane Ross wrote: "Greetings from an Ancien Prof! After having taught English, history and OIB subjects for 30 years at the Lycee (1973-2003), I am now continuing a career in the field of International Education. In 2004 I began work with the French cultural and and education services to create a program that offers instruction in French as a Heritage Language to immigrant students in New York City public schools. The program has expanded over the past two years, reaching students at five schools for new immigrants in New York, and offering curriculum support and research for a network that now includes schools in Boston, Washignton DC, Florida and Louisiana. Students come from many different countries, including Haiti, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Guinee, Camaroun, Morocco, Algeria and even France! The program was featured recently on a video that aired as part of the City Univerisity of New York's Canape television series. Our website includes much more information: http://facecouncil.org/fhlp/ We would welcome contributions and contacts , and often have openings for internships. We can be contacted at: heritageprogram@facecouncil.org." ● From Gauthier Willm (Director of Studies at LFNY from 1993 to 1999, thereafter Proviseur Adjoint at Lycée Louis Feuillade, Lunel -halfway between Nîmes and Montpellier.) "I'll retire from the Education Nationale in July 2007 and shall eventually come back to my 'first love': playing the organ." (Editor's note: When we wrote back to M. Gauthier to thank him for his message, we also asked whether it was true that the organ at l'eglise Saint-Eustache in Paris is the largest in France. His response:) "Almost true: it is the 3d largest organ with its 5 keyboards, 101 stops and 8000 pipes, behind Notre Dame de Paris (107 stops) and Saint Sulpice (102 stops). N.B. It is not the size of an organ and the amount of stops which are important, it's the sound. St Louis en l'Isle has a fantastic (new) organ built by Bernard Aubertin, there is another great instrument in Notre Dame des Blancs Manteaux and Michel Chapuis is the Titular of the wonderful historic organ at the Chapelle Royale in Versailles. The Lunel Cavaillé-Coll organ with its 22 stops is also classified as a historical instrument; there are some very beautiful instruments in this area, and I usually play on the organ at Anduze which has been damaged by the floods in 2002 and has to be renewed. Congratulations for the great Alumni job"! He also appealed for donations to a favorite project of his, and said that "the 'Amis de l'orgue du Temple d'Anduze' [click on link below] will be launching in a few days a fund raising campaign for repairing the organ. (Out of the 101,000 needed euros, we are still short of some 15,000.) Tax deductible in France, of course"! » ● Jean-François Genay (former Prof. de 7eme) is Head of the French American International School in Portland, Oregon. While researching my family genealogy, I discovered interesting information about my ancestors. I previously knew that some of my forebears can be traced back to the island of Cephalonia, off the west coast of Greece, as far back as 13th century, where the Rossolimo clan owned and controlled vast tracks of land. The startling information I uncovered is that this clan are the descendants of Hughes de Sully, baron and “officer general” from Normandy, in the service of Charles d’Anjou, king of Naples. Hughes commanded the Neapolitan army, which King Charles sent to help the Nicephore empire against the Byzantine emperor Michel Paléologue. In 1281, Hughes was taken prisoner by the Byzantines and imprisoned in Constantinople. Because of his red hair, Hughes de Sully was generally called “the red de Sully”, which in Greek became “Ros Solimo”. From this, the Greeks named his descendants “Rossolimo”. (The source of this genealogical information is the three-volume “Livre d’or de la noblesse ionienne” by Eugène Rizo-Rangabé, Paris 1926)." ● Philippe de La Chapelle "graduated from the Lycee Francais and Columbia College in New York and received a J.D. from Georgetown Law School. As in full fledged midlife crisis, I moved back to my family house in Montclair, NJ after 23 years in Manhattan. I had a partner for 10 years in NY but am a single and a confirmed bachelor now, and trying to enjoy the second half of my life, hopefully, with all sorts of projects in addition to my translation business. The move back to our old house from the city can be seen in one of those HGTV programs, called Bought and Sold (some friends joke about it as Butt and Soul!). I am completing the translation of a diary that my mother wrote in 1934 during the three month period preceding her piano recital at the National Theater in Havana. Working with an editor and the search for a publisher has also kept me busy. Meanwhile my nephew and nieces and godchildren are growing, as your children surely are. One of my godsons got his first job as an international auditor, one niece is graduating for the second time from the Courtland School in London with a thesis on a medieval church in Barcelona (of course!) and my newphew is finishing up at Williams College; he was brought to NY and put up at the Waldorf during some interviews on Wall Street, which he failed, but he is not the type, probably, and seems to be headed for a Long Island Country Club to coach tennis (he was the Massachussets Squash Champion). As always, I remain extremely close with Christine Phillpotts and Tahina Timothee. Christine has made me (and her family) terribly proud by being accepted into Harvard Business School for the fall of '07, and will certainly graduate at the top of her class as usual! (she’s going to hate me for saying that). Christine has already acquired her CFA, with little effort I must say, and will be leaving her position at JP Morgan Chase to pursue her MBA. Tahina is getting married this August to Rafael O. Perez, who is not a lycée alum, but who she met in high school while we were in the lycée. Christine and I are two of the Maids of Honor (out of 11 bridesmaids!), while Yves-Moliere Jean-Louis and Robert Rodney (lycée alums) will be two of the 11 groomsmen. Tahina is presently a tenured teacher at an elementary school in New Jersey, and is also the recipient of the selective KIPP Fisher Fellowship, which allows her to open her own charter school from the ground up; from choosing the building and location, to designing the curriculum! Tahina is an alumna of Teach For America. Over the past year two years, I have been able to reconnect with Martine Gren, who owns and manages, along with her husband and chef, Alex Urena, the popular restaurant “Urena”, where I have had the pleasure of dining on several occasions. Urena has been voted as one of the “Top 10 Newcomers” for 2007 by Zagat at number 3. Martine and Alex have a lovely little girl, Gisele, who is just as cute as a button. Additionally, I have reconnected with Laura Mamelok, and we try to meet every now and then despite our busy schedules. I even ventured out to Brooklyn recently to visit her in her new neighborhood! Laura works in publishing presently. Furthermore, I keep in touch occasionally (through “Facebook”) with Nancy Pena, former surveillante when I was a student, and who I also replaced as a surveillante myself in 2000, during her leave of absence. She appears to be doing well and as perky as ever. My older sibling, Daniela, a lycée alum as well, is presently residing in Paris, where I visited her this past February. She is working for Club Med (corporate), and finishing her Masters degree at ESCP-EAP European School of Management. Also this past February, I had a housewarming bash in my new apartment, which lasted into the wee hours, attended by, among many others, Jamil Laraqui, Robert Rodney and Yves-Moliere Jean-Louis, (who I had not seen in almost 10 years!). I also try to keep in touch with Eric LeCalvez, Hichem Kerma, and Herve Horner. Recently, after browsing through the LFNYalmuni.org website, under “services offered by alumni”, I was able to find the services of Gloria Tulliu ('73), DVM. As a result, my mother brought one of my two dogs, Lola, to her clinic, and received wonderful service and attention. Metroville Animal Clinic may very well become our new veterinarian clinic! As for what I jokingly call, "random lycée sightings", I often see Mme Pointelet (3eme groupe English teacher?) in the old lycée neighborhood (95eme), as I wait for the M96 bus after work. Also saw Mme Carton (former kindergarten teacher?) chatting with another former elementary school teacher whose name escapes me, also on the M96 bus. Briefly saw Mr. Giacalone (former surveillant) a couple of months back, once again in the old neighborhood, and caught a flash of Alexander Kaufman ('99), who I have not seen in more than 10 years, exiting the 6 train. Finally about me: I currently work at Mount Sinai Hospital within the psychiatry department. I graduated from Fordham Graduate School of Social Service in 2005, with a Masters in social work. During graduate school, I interned at Sinai, within psychiatry, and was hired shortly after graduation. I am a licensed Social Worker, practicing with children, adolescents and their families. I wear many hats within the outpatient psychiatry clinic, working as a psychotherapist on site and in the field, participating in clinical research and facilitating multiple-family groups. I would love to hear from other class of '99 classmates, including those that left in elementary and high school. That’s all for now!
