Avram (“Butch”) Kaplan wrote: "I spent 8 months in Montreal working on "Upside Down" directed by Juan Solanas for the French Company Onyx and Studio 37. The film is in French is "Le Monde a l'envers" and stars Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess. I then went to New York to start prep on "Gotti" directed by Barry Levinson and starring John Travolta, Al Pacino and Ben Foster. Sadly, the financing on Gotti fell through. Happily, I then found myself in Detroit on a 1968 period musical starring Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston directed by Salim Akil. In other news, our eldest daughter Ariella is getting married to Brian Hurwitz on December 17th."

Sylvie Kleinman told us that "she has been living in Ireland since 1987 and partially beats recession blues by spending most of her time in the past, though some of its inhabitants can give her grief! Working occasionally as a conference interpreter, she is mostly an academic and lectures and tutors in Trinity College and UCD in French and Irish history of the Revolutionary Period, with a special interest in war-time travel narratives and intercultural transfers, an evident outcome of our LFNY upbringing! Multi-tasking for survival means she has no time for online socialising sites and prefers the conviviality of email chats. She runs twice a week in the beautiful and free coastal setting of the south Dublin suburbs, swims and hill-walks. Her daughter Claire, now 24, has studied fashion design and also works as a DJ."

Theresa (Pearse) Eichenwald wrote: "I have looked at the new website, it looks like the Lycee has undergone a transformation. I am living in Texas and married to an author. He has written several books, mostly narrative nonfiction. I am a geriatric doctor and I love it. I rarely speak French anymore- I would be very rusty. I have three sons, the oldest is in college in Maine, at Bowdoin college. I love hearing from Lycee graduates: I have caught up with Juliette Rouillon, Diana Flescher and Charles Knapp. I am very interested in hearing what has happened to our classmates. I am looking forward to the newsletter."

Alix (Gudefin) Perrachon "started her magazine writing career while still in college and specialized in writing about antiques and oriental rugs. Fomer editor of The Oriental Rug Magazine and consulting editor on AREA Magazine, she has been a consultant in handmade decorative and oriental rugs to the design trade and private clientele since 1991. Her goal is to provide clients with the best possible quality at the best possible value."

Lee (Liberman) Otis: "Senior Vice President and Faculty Division Director, The Federalist Society: After graduating from Yale College and the University of Chicago Law School, where she served on the Law Review, Ms. Otis clerked for Judge Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Court of Appeals, served as a Special Assistant at the Department of Justice under Attorneys General William French Smith and Edwin Meese, and returned to clerk for Justice Scalia after his appointment to the Supreme Court. She then joined George Mason University School of Law as an Assistant Professor, where she taught Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, Appellate Advocacy and Legislation. She went on to serve as Associate Counsel to President George H.W. Bush, to practice appellate litigation at the Washington office of Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue, and to serve as Chief Counsel to the Immigration Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, General Counsel of the Department of Energy, and most recently as Associate Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice.
Ms. Otis has been an important member of the Federalist Society team since the organization’s beginnings 25 years ago......She was a Founding Director of the Federalist Society.
.......on April 26, Ms. Otis was awarded the Heritage Foundation’s Henry Salvatori prize for citizenship for her work in connection with the Federalist Society....." (http://www.fed-soc.org/aboutus/id.443/default.asp)

Avis de Décès: From Natalie Yates ('78): Jeremy Yates('74 and '75) passed away on July 3rd in Nyack, New York. He loved all things French, as well as the the welcoming kindness of the AALFNY and especially the friendship of two of its leaders, Alessandra and Micheline. He was student of world religions and mysteries and has now become part of the oneness of the universe. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Marguerite Yates of New York, and alumni brothers and sisters, John and Christopher Yates of Massachusetts, Marguerite Yates Chaffetz of Paris and Natalie Yates Cacciato of New York, as well as his nephew, a current Maternelle student in Grande Section at the LFNY.
His family believes it was fitting for Jeremy¹s spirit to be released from
his earthly body in time for Independence Day. The Yates family is
deeply moved by the outpouring of support and would like to thank the Alumni
Council and members of the Alumni Association (AALFNY) and Roger Liwer ('68)

Sylvie (Kleinman) Batt wrote: "Sylvie Kleinman (1974) has been living in Dublin, Ireland for many years after studying in Paris. She has one daughter, Claire, who just turned 21 and is studying Fashion Design. Sylvie worked for many years as a translator-interpreter but now mainly as a historian, specialised in the Irish in France during the French Revolutionary and early Napoleonic period. She currently holds a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Department of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin. Her research and publications look at travel literature as an untapped source of historical insights, 18th century translators and interpreters especially in military settings, and the missions to France of the great Irish nationalist heroes, Theobald Wolfe Tone and Robert Emmet."
She added: "I am rarely in NY but one of these years will manage to be there for a reunion! However some of the Anciens may wish to look me up if they're ever in Dublin."

"BNP Paribas is pleased to announce that Elsa Berry, Head of Corporate Finance for North America at BNP Paribas' Corporate and Investment Banking division was recently awarded the prestigious 'Woman of the Year/Trajectoire' award from 'HEC au Feminin,' the organization dedicated to female graduates from HEC, one of the top French business schools. 'I am proud and moved to receive this award which represents great recognition for all of my efforts both in my professional life and in the community. The training I received at HEC was a key stepping stone: it gave me confidence to succeed in a field largely dominated by men. I hope this award will inspire younger women who are just starting their careers,' explains Elsa.
Elsa graduated from HEC in 1980. Four years later, she founded Vendome & Company, a mergers and acquisition boutique that specialized in middle-market strategic transactions with offices in New York, Paris and Stuttgart. Avram Kaplan wrote: "I am back in LA after an 11 month stint in Prague and Paris, April 07 to March 08. We did all the post production work in Paris for "Babylon A.D." directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and starring Vin Deisel and Michelle Yeoh. I lived in the 6eme on Rue Genuegaud for 10 months just down the street from the Pont Neuf in the same building as Jean Jacques Annaud. My family was able to visit a few times and enjoyed a bit of French culture. The movie comes out August 29th here and August 27th in France.
On the family side, our eldest daughter Ariella, having graduated with English Honors from CSUN, is busy in the fine-dining restaurant business. Our second daughter Maayan has one more year at UT in Austin TX and is interning this summer in LA at a film studio and a talent agency. Our son is now 16 and learning to drive!"

Monika Skowronska wrote: " I want to thank [the AALFNY] for the fantastic work [it] is doing in keeping us all together. I am sure that each and every one of us has profited from this at various stages. I have contacted old school chums, some happily and successfully, other contacts resulting in a less than lukewarm reaction. That is the way things work out in the long run. And although I chose to initiate contact slowly, I feel that the rewarding follow up exchanges have made it all worthwhile. I would love to hesr from more of my former chums so I hope people will not be shy!
It has been a while since I wrote. Unfortunately being a carer and trying to sustain one's own, shall we say persona and interests, are by far all too time consuming. But I do find that I have some news.
I never thought that being a lawyer would prepare me for being a curator and archivist and historian. But in addition to the law and politics, I seem to have embarked on the former path, and in so doing as one of my directorships have created a museum at the Polish Social & Cultural Association. So if you are passing through London, get in touch and prepare to be exposed to all the excitement of the unique position which the Poles occupy globally, and in particular in contemporary British history.
In the meantime I pursue the search for an ever increasing family which in truth could by itself keep one person busy. All the best to everyone!"

Nadia Kondratiev) Popov wrote: "I'm still in Manila. Not a soul has come to visit, except people who've already been here – a sort of re-visit. So, where are the courageous among you? Or has everyone already been here? We are in the big house for another year after which we will probably scale down to an apartment, so, those who are tempted to see what Manila is, we can more than likely put you up while we're still in the house.
My son, having passed his Bac, will be moving to Edinburgh where he will study Architecture at University of Edinburgh. I will have a good excuse to go to Europe more often! It would be nice to run into some old classmates who are in Europe. By the way, my son being an ex-Lycée student, he is now an ancien in his own right. How old is one, when one's offspring are ancient?!"

Daniella (Beerman) Blyth wrote: "I came across the Alumni site of the Lycee quite by accident and thought it would be a nice opportunity to catch up on news and get in touch with the past again.
Just to let you know what happened to me since then, a quick bio. When I graduated from the Lycee, I spent a year studying history at McGill University and then moved back to Europe, to London, and did a degree at the London School of Economics (LSE). After graduating from the LSE, I married an Englishman and we had two daughters (Saskia, now 29 years old and living and working in London) and Sucilla (24, living and working in Vienna). My family and I moved around the United Kingdom and spent a year in Norway. In 1983 I divorced and moved with my daughters, to Vienna, Austria. I have kept my married name which is Daniela Blyth. I began working for the United Nations, and am still here, still working for the UN.
Over the past 30 years, I have traveled extensively and two years ago did a life changing tour of East Africa, back packing my way through the bush most of the time. It was an unforgettable experience. In the course of our tour, we spent 3 weeks in Tanzania. I fell in love with Tanzania, and now return regularly. Since then, I am heavily involved in helping out orphans in the region of Arusha (the 3rd largest city in Tanzania), and my daughters and I are funding three projects and doing some private fund raising among friends.
That, in a nutshell, is what happened to me. I would love to hear what happened to my other classmates of the year 1974. If anyone wishes to get in touch, I would be delighted to take up old threads again. Please feel free to give my email address to all those who knew me. I am also attaching a picture, evidence that the years have left their traces."

Peter Basch wrote: "Wow. Long story. I've just had my 7th wedding anniversary, to Ellen Sandler, the author of The TV Writer's Workbook, and a TV writer of many years. She's spending several hours a week picketing now. I have two stepchildren, one a senior at the University of Puget Sound,
and the other living and going to school in San Francisco. I am writing a tech/gadget column for LA2DAY.com, a Los Angeles lifestyle website. I am also writing plays for the Ensemble Studio Theatre (LA). For a living, I manage an eBay store called iSold It. The weather's great and life is sweet!"

I will be living in Paris for the balance of the year completing Post Production there."

● De la part de Albertine (‘Tinika’) (Van Der Klaauw) Vialar: "It is fun to read the becomings of classmates and teachers. Well ...

Theresa (Pearse) Eichenwald sent us this inquiry: "Has anybody got any info re Juliette Rouillon, Marie-Aude Nemo, Van Thi Nguyen? They were diplomats' children who left when we were fairly young. I am sure somebody remembers the Rouillons- there were ten of them." (If you have information you'd like to share with Theresa, her email address is available upon request.)

Diana Flescher sent her regrets for not being able to attend the AALFNY May 31st reunion in NYC, and wrote: "Hello to all from Jerusalem!
Although I now live in what I think if one of the most beautiful (and controversial) cities in the world, it is at times like these that I long to hop on a plane and join you on the rooftop. Best wishes to Jeremy (Yates) for hosting this event! A quick summary of my life: internist, specialty women's health, involved in health policy issues and director of two clinics, married to an Israeli ex-kibbutznik, two wonderful daughters, 16 and 13, currently caretaking my 90 year-old mother who lives with us. Happy, but too busy! I will be coming to the U.S. on July 20th, heading up to stay for the summer in the Adirondacks, until August 21st. Cheers to all of you and please be in touch!"

It's been fun and interesting to read the notes from the October
reunion, one I unfortunately could not attend. In April I celebrated
my 25th wedding anniversary, a very happy occasion! Still doing some

time with my husband's business (http://www.surfacestudio.com). And
city folk will appreciate that I just bought my very first car... an
upgrade from the bicycle, it is a ton of fun to drive to the beach or
the store in a 1994 Saab 900s convertible! I keep it out on the East
End of Long Island, where we spend weekends. My husband and I moved
back "home" in 1991 when my mother remarried, so I am back in the old
Lycee neighborhood on 96th St.: it has changed incredibly since we
were kids, but definitely for the better. Warmest wishes to everyone,
with many good memories of our years together. XOXO"

Jeremy Yates wrote that he "went to Dublin Ireland with Marguerite Yates '71, his older sister, for St. Patrick's Day which is a madhouse with all the European College students taking Spring break where the beer is plentiful and the parties lively. But we had a good time seeing the sites and going on the Dublin GhostBusTour to see haunted Dublin, including Bram Stoker's old flat and many of the ghoulish sites that may have inspired him. Marguey even found a four leaf clover on Slaine Hill, while Jeremy was more interested in the prechristian Celtic aspects of Ireland which he atributes to his contact with Asterix, Obelix & Panoramix from his years at the Lycee. Salut les copains!"

Nadia Kondratiev-Popov wrote: "I am still in Manila, in the hot, hazy, humid, extremely polluted atmosphere of this very third world country. I stress the third world-ness for those who have been in that world. It goes with corruption, crime, instability, a situation where the police or figures of authority are not necessarily your friends or interested in your well being. The other side of the coin is that, as ex-pats, we live in large, beautiful houses with household help and a certain ease of movement within the realm that ex-pats occupy, not all of society. We witness a level of poverty that is unimaginable until it has been witnessed first hand, routine injustices that a person from the developed world would not believe allowable even in theory. Our beautiful houses are equipped with electric and plumbing systems that are the subject of much of the local humour. There is a bathroom for every room, for example, and it is only after living here a while that you realize that that is the only way that you will have one working toilet, one working sink, one working shower, not always in the same room, but at least "a place to go". My computer has been fried even though it is plugged into a heavy duty voltage regulator; one power surge blew the regulator and the computer as well as several fuses. But here we are starting our sixth year of self-imposed exile.

Sergei, my husband, works for the Asian Development Bank. He's working on projects in China, mostly. As a "trailing spouse" I have found some things to do. I got an MBA from Herriot Watt University that does distance learning quite well. I was coerced into being the secretary of the spouse association of the ADB. That means that I edited their newsletter and as not too many people contributed material, I've had fun filling the pages myself with articles and illustrations which have amused most readers but have distressed the more conservative ones. They are now very relieved that my time is up and another spouse has taken over and all will return to the way it was before, when the spouse newsletter could be happily confused with any other ADB document.

Otherwise, I have been painting and am working on a book about Manila incorporating pictures and stories. Meanwhile, I have participated in art exhibits here and helped set one up and designed and published its
catalogue. I've recently launched into grant writing as a way to be 'gainfully employed'.

We spend our vacations traveling in the region as much as possible, though the summers are spent in Europe, mostly. I haven't been back to New York since summer 2001. After the Sept. 11 horror, the price of the airplane ticket became prohibitive. So, I see my family in France and we also go to Russia to see Sergei's family; life is made of compromises. My warmest affection to all the class of '74! I wish I could have been at the reunion!"

Helene Mokus de Barcza writes : « I saw Duncan Youngerman ‘74, Dan Chayefsky ‘74, and Claudia Baena-Soares ‘74 in the last few months, and am in touch with Supriya (Sabrina) Swerdlick ‘74, and Berthe Ake ‘74. I continue to have my own business, styling photoshoots for advertising (Camel, Absolut, Toshiba, Saks Folio) and doing most of the i.t. stuff for my husband's business (he rents hard surface backgrounds to stylists and photographers) as well. We’re celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary in April! It doesn't seem that long, and we have 2 wonderful godsons, a niece and a nephew for that family feeling! A few classmates asked me to mention what a success my husband, Joseph Szilva's, participation was in a group show at Garner Tullis gallery last May. Thanks so much to everyone, including Gloria Tulliu ‘73, Diane Rivers ’74, Susan Schwenger ‘80, Paul Schwenger ‘84, Alessandra Gagliardi ’86, and Claudia Baena and her husband, who joined us that evening. He is currently showing out of his studio. I have been busy working on some great holiday specialty catalogues and print advertising, mostly tabletop and still life with some character/wardrobe thrown in. Had a great summer on the East End of Long Island and hope that everyone is well.”

Marzena Laszewski writes: “Hi everyone! What can one say 28 years after graduating from the Lycée Français? I'm glad I found this website and am looking forward to hearing from some of my old friends. I went to college in Boston (at the suggestion of Sylvie Kleinman ‘74) and took a roundabout route to get to medical school also at Boston University. I trained at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Internal Medicine/Primary Care and finished in 1990. I married my college sweetheart while still living in Boston. We then moved to Fairfax, VA for about four years where my husband studied Historic Preservation at Mary Washington College. We are now happily settled in Rocky Mount, North Carolina (half-way between NY and Florida) where I am enjoying my practice in a large multi-specialty group. We like the warmer climate and the "small town" atmosphere. Everyone here is into golf and basketball. We have two wonderful girls, Sophie, age 10, and Emily, age 7. Unfortunately, these days I don't get to use my languages much--only when singing in the church choir or with an occasional patient. We only get back to NY about once or twice a year to visit my dad who still lives in New York and will be turning ninety this year! I would love to hear from my classmates--Dan, Alix, Chantal, Phillipe, Odile, Marie-Jose, Sylvie, Diane--to name just a few. Best regards to everyone and hope to hear from you soon. I guess that our thirtieth reunion is around the corner!”

Vivianne (Hanania) Kurzweil was lucky enough to meet up with two very close Lycée friends during August and September: Ioana, who was in from Europe for the summer with her 4 children and Diana Flescher, currently a women’s doctor in Jerusalem and mother of 2 girls. Vivianne is in her 12th year of teaching Math at the Lycée; her husband Bob is a Senior VP at Alliance Capital Management, their daughter (19) is in her second year at NYU and son (16) is currently a junior in high school. Vivianne also decided she had better catch up with Francine (Benzaken) Glick after too many 3 minute phone conversations and did so this October: Francine and her husband Paul are currently living in Livingston, New Jersey and their eldest daughter, Joelle, is currently a freshman at the University of Rochester. Their second daughter, Natalie, is in tenth grade. Francine started her own business several years ago and is currently seeking early stage financing. Her website can be found at www.waterjourney.com. Her husband, a computer scientist, is a consultant at Bell Laboratories. Francine's parents are living in New York and are doing fine. Her mother, Mme. Benzaken (former teacher and Directrice du primaire) is retired and volunteers several days a week at The Alliance Francaise. Francine would love to hear from any of her classmates.»

I am married to a woman from Mexico whom I met in Jerusalem, and we have 3 children, 2 girls and a boy (17,15 and 9). Do you know how I might track down Serge ‘73 or Philippe ‘74 Pinchinat?”

Sylvie (Kleinman) Batt writes that she “was delighted, one dreary day last January to see weird and wonderful things appear on a normally dreary and functional e-mail list.” After studying and working as a translator-interpreter in Paris, she moved to Dublin 15 years ago. After obtaining a Masters in Linguistics at Trinity College, she is now starting a PhD on translators and interpreters in the 1790s, and is also training the next generation of interpreters. Part of her research involved a lot of soul-searching on effective management of bilingualism. She has a teenage daughter named Claire, and despite the above, aspires not to be a boring academic! She adds: “Delighted with the LFNY web site and getting in touch with friends, anyone coming to Ireland for a visit?”
