2002 (1) (Jul. 2008 to Dec. 2011 newsletters)Class Notes Archives----- From December 2011 AALFNY Newsletter ----- ● Aline Sara informed us that she is "a full time staff reporter at a Beirut based online publication, NOW Lebanon.com, [and that she] also freelances for a few other publications in the region." She shared a fascinating article of hers entitled The state-sponsored gangs of the Arab Spring which begins: "They’ve been around for a while, but never have they been put to such twisted, terrifying and effective use. From Egypt’s baltageya to Syria’s shabiha, from Yemen’s baltija to the Libyan mourtazakad, state-sponsored mercenaries have been essential in squelching dissent during the popular uprisings spreading across the Middle East...." After receiving training in Boston last summer, I went to work as a consultant to the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. After 3 months in the Netherlands, I went to Lebanon where I was hosted by my LFNY classmate Aline Sara ('02) and I developed and led a workshop on "Youth and Reconciliation" at the American University in Beirut. In January, I moved on to Thailand to begin my second international placement. During my three months there, I focused on the role of young activists in the Burmese pro-democracy movement and worked with several organizations in Northern Thailand, from where most Burmese organizations operate in political exile. In April, I began my third and final international placement in Liberia. I am working with Youth Action International (YAI), an NGO that works to support and empower conflict-affected youth in Africa, and am overseeing the development of new programs in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Over the course of the year, I have kept a personal blog documenting my experiences at www.allaboutevedlmk.blogspot.com. [Click on link below to access Eve's blog] On another note, I'm thrilled announce that I was recently accepted to my top choice Masters program: the Sciences Po/ SIPA dual degree program in international affairs. I will spend my first year at Sciences Po in Paris and my second year studying at the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York." ● Our AALFNY Class of 2002 representative, Ana Ortiz, was kind enough to write to her classmates and to send us these updates, below.
