AALFNY Cocktail at La Corniche
Jeremy Yates '74
New York
The AALFNY Holiday Cocktail was held in NY on December 5th, 2002. A delicious, delightful and relaxed evening was had by everyone who attended the AALFNY holiday event on December 5th at La Corniche restaurant.
I got there around six and ordered myself an Amstel light which I nursed at the bar on the second floor until my old friend Eric Gotthelf '74 arrived and joined me. When we finished our drinks he asked me if I wanted another and that I could have any drink I wanted. So I ordered a James Bond vesper martini (shaken not stirred...) which is made by pouring 50% vodka and 50% gin into a shaker with ice and a dash of Lillet; shake it up and strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist. Delicious! Eric ordered one too.
Around 8 pm, we were called to dinner. We had all eaten enough of the hors d’oeuvres which consisted of cheeses and grapes and crudités and dip. We sat at two tables one round the other long and rectangular. To my right sat Babette Galy '66 and to my left sat Alessandra Gagliardi '86. The appetizers were cream of broccolli soup, rugula salad, or mussels on the half shell. I ordered the soup. The choice of entrée was pan-seared half chicken, salmon steak, or blanquette de veau. I ordered the blanquette de veau which was good, but I think it would have been better with more veal and less mushrooms. Dessert was a choice between tiramisú or an apricot filled crepe.
Looking at my watch I noticed it was late. So I bid goodnight to the rest of the party and went home satisfied at having had a really nice time.
La Corniche is a delightful restaurant with French atmosphere and flair. We should not hesitate to enjoy their hospitality again. The owner, Sayid is a 32 year-old entrepreneur who is Moroccan and went to the Lycée Jeanne D’arc in Casablanca, not to be confused with Joan of Arc High School in N.Y.C. He explained to me that the "Corniche" is the view of the Mediterranean from the Italian Riviera, to the Côte d’Azure, to the Costa del Sol and over across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco. He also explained to me that he worked really hard from age 22 to 32 in order to become restaurant owner. For this reason, I think we shouldn’t hesitate to give him our patronage.
Update: We are sad to find out that since our event, La Corniche has closed its doors and wish Sayid luck in his next venture.
