1981 Class Reunionby Vivian Vertes '81Editor's note: Vivian Vertes '81 and Robyn Frank-Pedersen '81 deserve special recognition and congratulations. Under their leadership, the Class of 1981 organized a series of initiatives to celebrate Twenty Years since the Bac. Culminating with a reunion at the Lycee's 72nd Street building on June 21, preparations for the month-long jubilee event included a Class Bulletin edited by Vivian, postings on the AALFNY alumni website and participation by the Class of '81 at the AALFNY's All-Alumni Cocktail in early June ["what a lovely party it was," wrote Vivian. "I had a perfectly fabulous time, and my classmates did too.Two old best childhood buddies (the men) had a reunion after 25 years (sob! sob! It was beautiful!! ).,"] and emails to classmates and friends by both the Alumni Association and the Lycee's development office. Anticipating the Class event, Vivian wrote in: "We expect about ten people. My English teacher(s) are coming, so of course as a writer myself I'm totally ecstatic to see them again...I simply adored my English teachers, they opened up the world to me... Roger [Liwer '68, AALFNY e-mail listmaster] was kind enough to forward e-mails to the latest 1981 Grads to register, so they know about it. I can't thank the Alumni Association enough, as you have helped make the reunion infinitely more interesting. Even if people are not in NY, your contacts helped us collect info and greetings from some of our friends for our Bulletin (and give us more juicy gossip!)." Vivian wishes to thank Evelyn Friedman and Christopher Bellis of the Lycee's development office for their gracious efforts and filed the following report: The Class of 1981 had a lovely Reunion from 6 -8 PM on Thursday June 21, 2001. Organized by Evelyn Friedman and Christopher Bellis of the Lycee's Development Office, fifteen class members and several former staffers came to exchange news in person, with another ten sending greetings via e-mail to the Class with news of their careers and their families. People came from New Orleans, and Paris and London and Washington DC, and since the class has not proven a particularly cohesive one over the intervening years, many of the mini-reunions of old friends were particularly dramatic and /or moving. Some of the grads included Robyn Frank-Pedersen, Vivian Vertes, Mary Cripps, Valerie Lavion and Paula Thomas Robinson as well as a host of folks who did not stay until Terminale but moved on to American High Schools. We had authors and models and film-makers and homemakers and a completely amazing time. A two-hour "Oh, my gosh, it's you !" reception was followed by an extensive tour of the building led by Ms. Friedman. We said goodbye to our stomping grounds, from La Bulle (new to us) to the art and gym rooms. Everyone had so many vivid memories of the facilities, the ways they have changed, and more importantly, the ways they haven't over so many years. It had been close to thirty years since some of us had been back and that was a truly amazing experience, to see how vivid the presence of the Lycee was in the lives of some of the alumni. Everyone had a wonderful time ! The Lycee's incredibly gracious organizers had gently remind us not to stay and make it an "overnight campout". We continued the exchange of baby pictures and business cards at a nearby restaurant, and promised to do it again soon. The 1981's can't thank the Lycee enough for putting up with us and giving us such a lavish and lovely party. |
